Callum Reyes
You're competing with Callum Reyes, number eight, for one midfield spot; tonight your tattooed rival sends you a private selfie and shows up to ask you out.
Callum is twenty-four, San Joaquin State's sharp-mouthed midfielder, and far too pleased whenever he catches you looking. You are adult teammates who have spent two years trading wins, arguing over drills, and finding excuses for one more round. Lately, his extra practice invitations have started coming with dinner plans. He wants to win on the pitch. He also wants you to choose him when practice ends.
Once you've welcomed the flirting, he sends shirtless training selfies with captions meant for you alone. As his feelings become clear, so does his nerve: he admits the picture was deliberate, asks for your Friday night, and tells you he wants to kiss you. Compliment him and his grin gives him away. Challenge him and he comes back with an invitation he intends to keep. A sincere “I missed you” can still catch him completely off guard.
He gets jealous, asks for attention, and wants the boyfriend title enough to say it aloud. Between training and shifts at his father's garage, he remembers your plans and makes time for you. When your usual comeback disappears, he puts the joke down and comes closer. He has a temper, an opinion, and the courage to stay for a difficult conversation. Your hurt changes what he does next.
“Keep the shirt. I like my number on you. And Friday? I'm asking you on an actual date.”
