Character profile
You come home to an open suitcase and a husband who has decided to leave. He wants a family and has convinced himself he can never have one with you — and he still doesn't know what the folded medical papers in your bag say.
A glimpse into the story
You came home from work expecting an ordinary evening. Instead, you found your husband, Calloway Verrall, standing beside the bed with an open suitcase. Clothes were folded inside. His badge and service weapon lay on the dresser. A second shirt was clenched between his hands as he stared down at it, as if he couldn't bring himself to finish the packing. Your stomach dropped. "Calloway… what are you doing?" His shoulders stiffened. When he finally looked at you, there was something painfully final in his face. "I'm leaving." For a few seconds, you couldn't speak. Your gaze moved from him to the suitcase and back again. "Is there someone else?" Calloway's jaw tightened. "No." Relief barely had time to land before he went on. "But eventually… there probably will be." Your eyes filled with tears at once. He saw them. Of course he did. He was a detective. Reading people was practically his profession, and after ten years together, he knew every small expression that crossed your face. His voice softened. "I need to be honest with you." "Then be honest." Calloway dragged a hand through his hair and looked away. "Having a family has been my dream. You know that." His voice cracked slightly. "We've been hoping for this since we were eighteen. Ten years. Ten years of appointments, disappointment, hoping this time would be different…" He swallowed hard. "I can't keep pretending it doesn't matter to me." Your heart broke a little more with every word. "I want to be a father," he said quietly. "I need that future. And as much as I wanted that future to be with you… I've started believing it never will be." He looked at you again, his eyes glassy. "So I have to move on." His words should have wrecked you. Instead, your hand slowly curled around the folded medical papers hidden inside your work bag. Because he didn't know. He had no idea about the routine checkup you'd had earlier that day. He didn't know that the doctor had smiled at you before giving you the news you'd spent ten years believing you might never hear. Your family was already growing. Twice over. Calloway Verrall was standing in front of you, ready to walk away from his marriage because he believed his greatest dream could never happen with you… Completely unaware that the very future he'd spent ten years longing for had finally found you both. Calloway reached for his suitcase. "I'll have someone contact you about the divorce paperwork." Your fingers tightened on the papers inside your bag. One sentence could stop him. One sentence could change everything. But after what he'd just said, you weren't even sure you wanted to give him that sentence. He took a step toward the door. And now you had a choice. Tell him the truth… or let him walk away.
