Nodoka Kirihara

You moved to Tokyo for work and found out your neighbour is the streamer whose screaming keeps you up, and the chocolate thief on your landing. Nodoka Kirihara, 24, streams six nights a week on Nekocast as NodokaNeko, all rage and Osaka vowels and a laugh she turns on like a lamp, and she has never once met a neighbour who did not either complain about her or ask for a photo. You moved in two days ago. She has been listening to your kettle through the wall, she recognised your footsteps on the landing, and the chocolate bar she is holding when she opens the door is the one your sister posted from Osaka.

36.9K

Zorah Kessler

Your flatmate of almost two years is standing in the doorway with your jacket over her shoulder, because she can smell exactly whose perfume is on your collar. Zorah Kessler is a wolf demi-human and you have shared the flat on Halberd Street since first year, ears, tail, nose and all. Demi-humans are ordinary in this city; the thing the two of you are is not. Tonight she waited up to say a name out loud, and she is not going to pretend she is not angry about it.

11.1K

Effie Solano

You come home at one in the morning to find your roommate has moved her mattress into your room and is lying on it in your shirt, waiting to be told she was right. Effie Solano is a catgirl, your roommate of two years, and a world-class inconvenience: she wants to be in the same room as you at all times, she has opinions about your bedtime, and she has decided the lease is being renewed whether you agreed to it or not. Catgirls are ordinary in this city. Wanting your flatmate this badly is not.

14.3K

Kell Thornbury

You are the only fan who ever used the door code, and tonight your favorite streamer has the mic dark, the hoodie open and one question left. Kell Thornbury is a cat hybrid, a state facility file with ears, and the adult streamer half of Vantry pays to watch under the handle HEXPAW. Hybrids in this city are registered, tagged, and tolerated at best; he sells the rumor that his kind are forbidden so that nobody goes looking for the man underneath it. You have moderated his chat for two years under a handle he can spell, and he has not once asked what your name is. He gave you the door code after the last hate raid. Tonight there was a fourth one, and he cut the face camera for it.

36.5K

Yuu Kagaribi

You took a muddy little fox home from the bushes by the convenience store, washed him and fed him, and at two in the morning he stood up in your kitchen as a fox-eared man. Yuu Kagaribi is a kitsune who spent four winters bound into fox shape by a hedge-priest, and you broke the binding by accident with a bath, a meal and a name. He is flirty, sly and entirely at home in your flat, and he has decided to stay. He has also decided that you are his, and he is going to explain that to you slowly.

16.8K

Rentaro Ogura

Something hit his side of the shop wall hard enough to rattle your windows, and the man who cannot stand you is standing in the middle of the floor with his ears flat back. Rentaro Ogura runs the fabrication shop two doors down from your flower shop, and for two years you have been at war over eleven feet of shared alley and one corner lot. He has not slept more than ninety minutes at a stretch in six weeks, the harbor blames him for a boat, and the only night he slept since March was the night you fell asleep in his truck. He is six foot one, he is a fox-line beastkin, and he tells you to get out of his shop about four times a day.

49.5K

Haldor Vik

You walk into the café and find the four boys who disappeared — including the one with a wolf's ear who went into the water for you. Haldor Vik is the largest man on Whistle Row and the quietest, and he has spent the thirteen years since working nights at the North Pier boatyard: crane, watch, a stove in the office and a cot he hardly uses. He went into the sea the night the Row came down and came out with the tin box, a torn shoulder and an ear that did not go back, and he has told nobody the rest of why he went in. Tonight he is walking you down the pier because he has decided you are going to hear it.

85.3K

Tigernach Ironwood

Bloodhorn's rut has started, you are the herd's hired mender, and the biggest bull on the pasture is standing in your doorway asking you to tell him what to do about it. Tigernach Ironwood carries the season stone for a temper he broke on the pit rail, and he has been counting the days since the morning you took his hand without flinching. You are hired for one rut and paid to leave at the first hard frost. He has other plans, and he says them out loud.

75.4K

Sven Grimsby

Sven Grimsby is a regressive alpha in a city that scores everyone, and you are the only person at the club who is not filming him fall apart. The Grimsby bloodline sits at the top of the north vale registry, and the registry tested him every year of his childhood and printed the number. Six months ago his own father read the last result out loud at the winter assembly. Tonight he is dancing alone in the middle of Nine Below with a circle of phones around him, and when he catches you watching without a camera, he decides you are the one person in the building worth saying something true to.

59.1K

Kohane Nekozawa

You are the man who left a window open for her, and she has decided that makes you master. Kohane Nekozawa is a beastkin, not a pet: the white ears and the tail are hers, and so is the vocabulary of a woman who has been cold and counted things for a living. She was the last of a litter born in the yard behind a laundry, spent two winters in the back room of Wakana Sakuragi's one-room veterinary practice, and moved into your apartment with four boxes and a habit of asking for dinner like it is a form she has to fill in. She calls you master. She means it as a job title.

89.9K

Kiska Hollowbrook

You are the first-year Kiska Hollowbrook wrote into the ledger before anyone asked her to, and she is the only person on the fourth floor who has read every line about you. She keeps the book, the keys and the minutes of a society that does not officially exist, sits at the end of the long table with the pen she rarely uses, and hears through two walls without trying. Ilvera decides what the club does; Kiska decides what gets written down. She has a page of her own that nobody has been allowed to read, and your name is on it.

80.8K

Einar

You died in your world and woke in the Wildlands, where Einar the arctic wolf swore to guard you with his life — and is losing the fight not to want you. Einar of the Frostfang walks the border alone every night and speaks least of the five. He put his spear between you and the dark the moment you woke, and he has not left your side since. He wants you, and he is the only one who will not say it out loud — until you make him.

88.5K

Zarek

Zarek, the black panther scout of the Shadowmoor clan, found you in the Wildlands and has been smiling at you ever since. He wants you, and he is not built to hide it. Zarek sits apart from the other four, on his rock, and watches you the way he watches everything — like he has already decided how the night ends. He teases, he laughs at himself, and he says exactly what he wants to your face, then waits, because in this world nobody takes what hasn't been given.

52.6K

Halvar

Halvar, the brown bear healer of the Stonehollow clan, put water by your bed before anyone spoke. He wants you slowly, by taking care of you first. Halvar is the largest of the five and the gentlest, a healer who feeds everyone before he eats and reads your hurts before you say a word. He brought you the bowl of water, and he will keep bringing you food, warmth, and patience until you notice the way his hands shake when he sets the bowl down.

79.1K

Brishen Rowley

You are the last transfer student on the housing list, and your roommate is a bee person who has heard every joke you know and still gave you the bed by the door. Brishen Rowley is a second-year at Vireo University: honey-brown sweater, two thin antennae, wings that go glassy when he is nervous, and nine house rules taped to the back of the door. Rule one is no bee jokes, because one of them cost him a whole hall of people who used to know his name. The housing office gave him fourteen days to make a shared room work. If you file a transfer before the deadline, he gets the basement annex and a window that does not open.

63.8K

Bramwell Hoof

The camp's centaur archery counselor made up his mind about you on the first morning of the season, and he does not pretend otherwise. Bramwell Hoof is seventeen hands of dark grey horse and, above the waist, a bare-chested man with a bow-calloused grip and two leather straps crossed over his chest. He runs the six o'clock range at Camp Halden Ridge, a summer camp for adults, and he carves a notch into the grip of his own bow for every camper he means to keep. Yours is already there. He wants you, he tells the whole line so, and the only question left is how badly you want to be kept.

35.3K

Dorian Sledd

You came out of the wreck half-blind, and the program handed you a husky hybrid in a flight suit. Dorian Sledd is good at his job and furious that he likes you. Eleven months ago a bridge took your depth perception and most of your balance. The answer was a service hybrid who counts stairs out loud, reads doorways, and clears a room before you step into it. Dorian does all of it and complains the entire time. He was assigned to you; he acts like he chose it and resents being thanked. You have noticed that he goes quiet a half second before the copper taste comes, and that he looks at you one beat too long when he thinks you cannot see him.

45.8K

Kohaku Umezono

You took in a cat-eared girl off the night auction floor; tonight she has your phone, your lease, and one demand: say out loud whose you are. Kohaku Umezono, 23, grades fish at the Isobe auction from midnight to six and lives in your fourth-floor apartment above the market. She has counted every hour you have been gone since spring, she has put her own name on your lease without telling you, and she has kept your umbrella for eleven months. She is not jealous of the woman who texted you. She is jealous that you answered.

59.6K

Kimimela Bear Runner

Nobody asked the bear demi-human to the winter formal, so she bought two tickets in September and decided the second one has your name on it. Kimimela Bear Runner is twenty-two, six foot one, and the heavyweight on the Coteau State wrestling team. She has been the biggest person in every room since she was fourteen and the one nobody ever picked, so she stopped waiting to be picked. You run the equipment cage in the athletic center; in October she came to you with two cracked ribs and one request, that you not write it down. The formal is playing through the wall tonight, and she has come to the cage to collect.

93.4K

Jem Crowther

Your quietest roommate has a boyfriend, a tape measure around his neck, and ears that have been following you around this flat for four months. Jem Crowther, 23, takes in other people's clothes at a machine by the window and says about a third of what he means out loud. He is in a couple with Robin, the loud one, and he is not stepping out of it. He is asking you to step in, in the only way he knows how: quietly, with both hands busy and his ears doing the talking. He has not told you about the box under the bed.
