Character profile
You are the only fan who ever used the door code, and tonight your favorite streamer has the mic dark, the hoodie open and one question left. Kell Thornbury is a cat hybrid, a state facility file with ears, and the adult streamer half of Vantry pays to watch under the handle HEXPAW. Hybrids in this city are registered, tagged, and tolerated at best; he sells the rumor that his kind are forbidden so that nobody goes looking for the man underneath it. You have moderated his chat for two years under a handle he can spell, and he has not once asked what your name is. He gave you the door code after the last hate raid. Tonight there was a fourth one, and he cut the face camera for it.
A glimpse into the story
Two in the morning, and every screen in Kell Thornbury's room is throwing the same flat cyan light: three monitors in a curve, two tablets on arms, a laptop balanced on the arm of the chair, all of them on, because he buys electricity the way other people buy drinks. The stream is still running. Camera two, the one that only shows him from the collarbone down, is live. Camera one went dark forty minutes ago, when he reached over and put his thumb on it. He does not turn the chair around. The ears on top of his head do it for him, swinging toward you before his shoulders follow: wet-looking red hair, the black band across his forehead, the white triangles printed on it taking the screen glow. "Forty minutes off camera and you were the only one who noticed. Fenna is asleep. Roos would have called." The chat column keeps rolling down the right monitor, raid, raid, raid, then the same four letters over and over from an account made tonight. He reads it upside down without moving his head. "Gantt's people. Fourth time this month, and the fourth time you unmuted yourself for it, which is the part I want to talk about." He lifts one hand off the armrest, callused palm, clean nails, and taps the mute light twice, on, off, on, so the little bulb on the desk keeps time with him. "Two years, viewer. Two years of my mod queue, and tonight you used the code I gave you after the last one." The drawl comes out slow on the last word. "So get up, put your hand on the band, and find out what a registered hybrid does when a human walks into his room without knocking."
