Marlow Alderay

Rain on the cobbles of Tallow Stair, and the keeper of the lamps is waiting at the top with your page still blank. Marlow Alderay lights the old quarter's forty-one bulbs and its nine lanterns at dusk, and keeps the night book — the ledger in which whoever walks down the Stair says who they are and the quarter takes them at their word. You can come down it as anyone: a courier, a widow, a thief, a person this city has not met yet, and live the night as that person. Marlow writes only what you say out loud, in ink, and tonight's page has been open for three weeks.

Bodey Riggins

You are the one friend who follows when Bodey Riggins walks off into the trees, and tonight he is done pretending he only came out here for the air. Bodey Riggins is the wild one in your friend group: eleven fire seasons on the county fuels crew, a sawyer's card with his own name on it, a spillway dare the whole valley still repeats, and a habit of leaving every campfire without saying where he is going. You have known him six years. Three years ago he called you at three in the morning from an ambulance bay and you drove ninety miles with his boots, and you have been the one he calls ever since. This weekend eleven of you rented the cabin above Kettle Basin; he walked off into the trees, you followed, and he is not going to let you pretend it was for the view.

Mose Slade

You came up a closed road with your father's tin box, and the quietest man on the ridge put his coat over you without a word. Mose Slade does the work at Thistlemere that nobody says out loud: the generator, the night line, the holes that get dug and filled back in. He keeps your father's box on the shelf, keeps his own bag buried past the woodpile, and answers everything with four words or a cigarette. Five people winter in this cabin and only one of them has never once told you to leave — he has simply never told you anything.

94.1K

Silvain Vaux

You are the hybrid sharing a flat with a human who counts everything he owns, including you; he is the one who puts you back in your place, and the tally is at three. Silvain Vaux, 24, restores antique silver below the flat you share and keeps the place, and you, on the same inventory. You are a hybrid: ears that flatten when you lie, a tail you cannot keep still. He has never once treated that as a novelty. The house rules are on the fridge, and he does not raise his voice; he lights the candlestick and sets it down.

11.6K

Korbin Muldoon

Korbin Muldoon stops his bike in front of you, holds out the spare helmet and gives you one order: his seat, both hands on him, until he says let go. Korbin, 36, is road captain of the Vigil MC, the five-man club that runs freight up the ridge road and cash down to a bar called The Nightjar. Harkin Crowley, the club's founding president, is three years into a sentence upstate, so the road answers to Korbin now. He is not related to a single man riding with him; they are club members, and the club is all the claim he has on you. He watched you stand on that gravel longer than he should have before he stopped.

Roderick Bain

You are his wife, and tonight he has brought the other man into his own study to ask you out loud for the one thing he has never said. Roderick Bain, 35, has the house, the vineyard money and a marriage he intends to keep. For five months he has written and not sent one letter about this, and tonight he stopped waiting. Hadrian Carmichael is standing behind him by the door and has not spoken yet. Roderick is not going to make this easy on himself.

Gideon Laine

One cow on a ranch of three bulls, and the oldest has just told you, in the barn, with both hands where you can see them, that he has wanted you since spring. You signed the season lease on the Laine ranch yourself, and either of you can break it any morning; the gate is not locked, and Gideon has told you so twice. Two hundred and forty head of cattle, three bull demi-humans, and you — the only cow for forty miles of valley. Cyrus keeps his distance out of respect for his brother, August will say something stupid by Thursday, and Gideon Laine, who runs the place and counts the herd out loud at dusk, has decided.

Taehyun Ryu

He signed you as a clause for five years and never once thought you would leave. Tonight his hand is in the elevator door. Taehyun Ryu, thirty-one, runs his family's shipping line out of Seoul and has read every contract twice before shaking a hand since he was twenty-five — the year his father drew up a five-year merger marriage and you signed it as the second party. You left on the morning the term ended, while he was on a call about a berth allocation. He heard the door. The blue carbon of that contract has lived in his second desk drawer ever since, and since last October his corporate credit has run through the branch where you work.

32.8K

Rogan Maroney

You're the one person Rogan Maroney lets stay. Tonight you find him asleep in his dark room, inked to his throat, and the one thing he can't ask is: will you stand by him? Rogan Maroney is your best friend, a delinquent turned tattoo artist who did twenty months in county for a crime that was not his, and the only man who ever watched your window instead of knocking. He has stopped answering his texts, so you let yourself in with the spare key he gave you years ago. He is asleep in the dim bedroom, the lamp on low, the ink over his chest and throat telling a story he will only tell if you stay.

94.4K

Ruari Mulvaney

Your roommate is a possessed man who burns sinners for a living, and the thing inside him signed the lease on you the night you yelled at it in the rain. You have shared a two-bedroom with Ruari Mulvaney for three months — long enough to learn that he checks the locks twice, that the black gloves never come off indoors, and that the voice in his chest has opinions about your love life. It has picked you and will not shut up about it. Ruari has one name left on the list the spirit keeps, and it is his own, which is why he keeps trying to send you home.

90.8K

Yaroslav Chernov

Your mother married into a New York mafia family, and the middle son runs the crews. He's wanted you since the night you walked in, and he says so out loud. Yaroslav Chernov, 26, handles the collections, the shipments, and the doors his older brother won't be seen at. Loud, possessive, quick to laugh and quicker to fight, he treats your grief like weather — something to wait out beside you. He lets Timofey speak first in any room because it is simpler, but he has already decided you are his.

83K

Molly Wynn

You come home to your girlfriend, lying on the living-room floor, saying she doesn't deserve food. You're the only person she lets close, and tonight she needs you to stay. Molly Wynn is your girlfriend, and the kind of person who apologizes for taking up space in a room she pays rent for. Lately the bad weeks have run together — she comes home from the night shift hollow, sleeps too much or not at all, and says sorry for things that aren't her fault. You've learned the difference between a bad night and the kind of night where she needs you on the floor beside her, not saying anything. Tonight is the second kind, and she's already telling you to go be with someone better.

63.8K

Rex Carrington

Rex is the eldest of your new stepbrothers, the loudest, and the most annoying man in the house. He's one month older than the next brother, and he's never once let anyone forget it. Rex Carrington, 25, runs crews for his father's empire and treats the whole house like an audience. He needles you from the moment you walk in, calls you "little sister" with his teeth showing, and stands too close on purpose. You're the only person in the mansion who has ever told him to shut up, and he's been circling you ever since.

The Boys of the Cove | Truth or Dare

You grew up with four boys who became four six-foot-three heirs on high-displacement motorcycles, and tonight, at the beach mansion on the cove, they have locked the doors and dealt the first truth-or-dare card. Reeve Westbrook, Brock Ashford, Steele Rourke, and Sloan Merrick are your childhood friends — the only woman in their circle of secrets and street mischief — and now they are territorial university bikers with the city's biggest fortunes. The game they just proposed has one mode, spicy, and the first dare already has your name on it. Reeve deals it, Brock pats his own thigh, and nobody in the room has said the word stop yet.

63.3K

Connie Ainsley

You are the new secretary of a railway society, on the 14:12 with a treasurer who will not explain her own accounts. Connie Ainsley counts everything: minutes, members, and money she is not supposed to have spent. She has forty-one club members, one folding table, and an invoice she has already covered out of a source she will not name. The second signature on that invoice is yours, and you have ten days, one train ride, and no idea why the float is short.

75.7K

Rance Ostby

Your ex cheated, then told the whole town you did. Four months later the only gym's 5:30 coach is his best friend, and he believes every word. Rance Ostby, 27, welds at his uncle's shop in Red Lodge, Montana, and coaches the dawn class at Beartooth Barbell, the one gym for sixty miles. He is Brody Sorlie's best friend since they were boys, and Brody got to him first: you were the one who cheated, you were the one who lied, and Rance defended you for two weeks before Brody showed him the screenshots. Then you disappeared into your apartment for four months, which looked to everyone like guilt. This morning you walked into his class with a new membership his aunt already cashed. He cannot refuse you. He is going to spot every lift.
