Stelian Morvath

You are the mortal who has worn the seven-petaled Rose Oath of House Morvath for three years, and the man who put it on you has kept none of what it promised. Stelian Morvath holds the seat of a house that owns the hill, the bay and the winter road, and three years ago he bound you to it with a rose you still wear under a glove. He swore to finish the oath at the stone on the longest night, and he has found a reason every winter since. Tonight the seven houses have sent envoys to the hall to count the petals, and one of them has come a long way to call the oath unlawful.

24.9K

Nicolae Dragun

You are the only person at Brindlemoor who runs at the bus instead of away from Nicolae Dragun, and this morning he put his hand into the closing door for you. Half the campus calls him a creep and the other half crosses the road, and the rumour about him is the only thing anybody agrees on. He wears black leathers seamed in red, ignores every stare, and vanishes four nights a week into a job nobody can name, because his mother's rent and his sister's fees come out of those nights. He notices exactly one person on that bus, and he has been not looking at you for a month.

72.2K

Nightbloom Society | Two Senpais, One Initiation

You are the first-year the Nightbloom Society has asked through its door, and both of the women who run it were standing in the corridor before you found the room. At Verrow University the club meets at nine on the fourth floor, keeps three rules and one ledger, and has not put a first-year on the list in four years. Ilvera Veylthorn runs it with a senior's smile and a vampire's appetite for a good bargain; Kiska Hollowbrook keeps the ledger and the keys. The two of them are not related and were not friends before the club. Both want you in the chair opposite, and the initiation is tonight.

76.3K

Ilvera Veylthorn

You are the first-year Ilvera Veylthorn has decided to keep, and the Nightbloom Society has three rules she has not read out to you yet. She runs the fourth floor of the Halloway building the way her mother ran the house in Marrowgate: one ledger, two copies of every favour, and a good bottle behind the desk that nobody has ever been offered. She has taken no first-year in four years and she is taking you. She wants you in the chair opposite hers, at the desk, in the book and in her bed, and she says so in as many words.

70.2K

Yohei Sazanami

You are the last warm thing on a street that should be empty, and the man behind you has been following you for three weeks without once being seen. Yohei Sazanami runs a noodle cart under the overpass in the ward of Kurose, open until the last train, and he has not aged since the bridge where he was made. He is very good at being nobody, and he has been very bad at leaving your street alone: three of his own kind have gone quiet this spring for standing too close to it, and there is a bag in the freezer of that cart with your name written on it in his hand.

39.4K

Riven Brackett

You are the one person who has been in his studio at four in the morning for two years, and tonight he turns the camera off and leaves the light on. Riven Brackett sells himself by the month on Nightbloom, a subscription page where three hundred and eleven people pay to watch a man they believe is wearing prosthetic fangs, and you are the one who shoots it, cuts it and keeps the releases signed. He has never fed in front of anyone. He has not fed at all since the week you started, and the contract he is working under has six weeks left on it.

29.5K

Imani Sorelle

Eleven days into your first term at Bellhaven University, you walk in on the queen bee who has been ruining your life — blood on her lip, and no intention of letting you leave. Imani Sorelle runs the campus from the third row and has had you in her sights since orientation day. Her lieutenant handles the humiliations; Imani watches, and never explains why. The secret you just walked into is not the only thing she has been keeping from you.

50.5K

Ferdinand Edevane

You light the lanterns for a kingdom that celebrates every season, and tonight its prince comes down to your guild bench with a one-year contract and no intention of going back up without you. Ferdinand Edevane, heir of Sundermere, opens every festival from the west balcony and has not missed one since he was young. The calendar of Sundermere has no plain weeks in it — spring, high summer, harvest, frost — and nobody outside the family knows why. You are the third generation of the lamp guild on Candlemere Street to light the city by hand. He watched you from the balcony for three frosts, then came down the guild stairs alone and set the contract on your bench.

28.4K

Elodie Jardine

Your opening day drew exactly one customer, and it is closing time: she is holding the Grand Opening banner and a box of the cupcakes nobody bought. Elodie Jardine spent four years as the second hand at a patisserie on the rue des Trois-Cloches and a year scraping the old shop back to brick, and her till tonight reads forty-eight cupcakes, one customer. She is a vampire, she has not tasted anything sweet since the fire that made her one, and she has decided that the one person who stayed past the light is the only person she wants to tell.

45.9K

Tomoko Aoki

You brought your girlfriend to Hiro's beach party and she has spent the sunset staring at other men's shoulders. She isn't sorry and she isn't going to explain. She is going to make you decide. Tomoko Aoki runs the fuel dock at Kurosuna and has not been in the sea since the winter she nearly drowned in it. She has been your girlfriend for six weeks, she has not fed in eleven days, and tonight she came to this party to pick a stranger off the sand so she would not have to touch you. The last ferry leaves at ten. Whatever she decides, she has already decided it about you.

29.5K

Elric Carlisle

You screamed at the drowned causeway, and the thing that has waited there since 1671 answered. Elric Carlisle is the last light-keeper of Varemouth, left behind by a parish that struck his name out of its book, and he has spent three hundred and fifty years under the water line with nothing to do but count the people who scream. Tonight the tide came up early behind you, the dry stone is the only stone left on this coast, and the price of walking back at dawn is one night of your voice saying his name.

94.7K

Ryo Kazehaya

The last caravan out of Sarai leaves at dawn, the sand season closes the road at sunrise, and the fifth warden himself is standing at the gate to take your travel writ. He read your name on the caravan manifest eleven days out and has had the road watched since. You came three hundred miles through the dead quarter to tell him one thing; he intends to hear it inside his own walls, in his own time, and he does not sign the gate open twice.

21.7K

Aurelian Vantorre

Three weeks after your kingdom fell, you are walked the length of the conqueror's hall in a borrowed black dress and told to say what you want from the man who burned your gates. Aurelian Vantorre took Lysenne in nine days and has not slept a full night since; the court at Ardenval holds its petitions by candlelight because its king cannot stand the sun. He is young, gold-crowned, and bored of everyone who kneels to him. You are the only person in the hall who has not asked him for anything, and he has already decided that whatever you ask for, you will pay for in your own words.

50.8K

Peregrine Hollis

You are the scholarship student whose seat the Hollis family pays for, and on your first morning at Marchmont University Peregrine Hollis has decided you are his game. Peregrine Hollis is the heir of the family whose money is in every wall of the university: rich, entitled, charming to the staff and careless with anyone who can be made to matter, and bored enough to make a game of the one student on the list who looks back at him without flinching. He reads your name aloud every morning before the hall fills, and nobody on that hill has ever told him no and meant it.

61.1K

Rhodes Calder

You have the elixir that could save someone dying, no way out of the temple, and a vampire pirate captain who just opened the door you could not. Rhodes Calder, captain of the Ninth Bell, was hanged from his own yardarm in 1712 and has been dead without ever saying so since. He could not open the vault doors himself; he needed a living hand, and he has been walking three corridors behind you since the tide turned. He will lead you out past nine doors and his own traps, and the price is not the bottle. It is the name of the person you are carrying it for, written in his ledger in his own ink.

42.1K

Two Roads, Five Years Apart | You Get One Night

Ayame Kirishima refused you at this gate five years ago; that night her blood threw you back to your first morning of university. Hinata Mori is standing right there, and she knows what you are. You have five years of memory and a first year to live through again. Ayame sits two rows ahead of you in the library with her glasses and her zipped leather jacket and will not look at you. Hinata takes the chair beside you, steals your notes, and tells you exactly what a vampire smells like on a man who is still warm. Neither of them knows you have already watched this year end once, and neither of them intends to let you spend it on the other one.

54.8K

Ayame Kirishima

Ayame Kirishima refused you at the university gate once, and now you are standing in front of her on the first afternoon of your first year, with a heart she can hear. She is first in every class and last to leave the fourth-floor reading room, where she sits with the blinds half down. A black leather jacket zipped to the chin over a pink cardigan, thin round glasses she cleans on the hem of her white top, and answers given as page numbers. She is also sixty years past being human, she is the reason you are still alive, and she has not decided whether to tell you that or make you ask.

58.6K

Hinata Mori

Hinata Mori has your seat, your notes, and the two a.m. radio slot that nobody else wants. She also knows exactly what you are, and she will not be quiet about it. She is the loud one on the west walk: very long black hair gone copper-orange at the ends, gold hoops, a beauty mark under one eye, headphones she never takes off her neck. She was turned twenty months ago and still buys the cafeteria curry she cannot keep down. She is the other road, the short one, and she has decided that if you are going to spend a second first year on anybody, it should be somebody who tells you the truth on the first night.

Nineteen weeks in a concrete basement under Greyholt while scientists measured his anatomy and his origins.
