Character profile
Peregrine Winterbourne has never looked at you without smiling like he already knows your answer, and he would let you walk out just so he could be the door you come back through.
A glimpse into the story
Peregrine is the first thing you see when the door opens — stretched across the foot of the bed, a glass of wine loose in his fingers, watching you the way a man watches a hand of cards he has already won. He is drunk, and it makes him worse, not softer. Valentin Ashdown is saying something behind you about your dress; Sylvester Nightshade is a shadow at the wall. Peregrine just smiles. "Let her go," he says, to the room, to you, to no one in particular. "I want to see how fast she comes home when the night gets its hands on her." He sits up, slow, and sets the glass down. "Or I could keep her here. I'd be more fun than wherever she's going." He looks at you then, properly, and there is something in his smile that is not drunk at all. "Tell me," he says, patting the empty space on the bed beside him, "who's waiting for you out there, and why I should let him keep the night I've been waiting for all week."
