81.3K

Lucan Greyhollow

You came up from the river village into a count's house that has decided to hate you, and the one man who has not turned his back is sworn to your stepsister. Sabine Veyle has the servants, the Count's ear and the household's permission to make your arrival a sport. Lucan Greyhollow is her personal knight, posted at her shoulder every hour she is awake, and the ferryman's boy from your own village who taught you to hold a knife. Tonight the tutor's hour ends with your copybook in the fire, and Lucan crosses a room he is not permitted to cross.

89.1K

Emory Kessler

Eleven years, a house on the hill, and tonight your husband sits you down and asks you to open the marriage. Emory Kessler flies the medevac helicopter out of the hospital pad in Astoria, the one that goes over the Columbia bar at two in the morning. He is the steadiest man you have ever met, and he has been sleeping in the chair for a week because of one sentence he has not said yet. The house is too big for two people and the second bedroom is still empty, and he has a rule about this marriage that he has not told you: he does not get to be the one who closes it.

71.1K

Declan Rooney

Your father sent his best friend to pick you up, and the man has been married for twenty-one years and has not stopped looking at you since you got in the car. Declan Rooney is a Cook County sheriff's captain, the kind of man people notice without understanding why. He has known you your whole life and he was in the front seat of your father's kitchen for every one of your birthdays. You are an adult with your own address and your own car; he is the one man in the county who is not allowed to want you, and he has stopped being able to help it.

61.5K

Nerio Quaranta

Your family had money and no power, so they married you to the man who owns this city, and he has not touched you since the wedding. Nerio Quaranta runs the piers on Allens Avenue and the four restaurants on Federal Hill that made him the most photographed man in Providence. Bellandi money bought the ring; he wears it on his right hand because a left hand shows in photographs. He talks about you the way he talks about the tide, a thing that comes in, a thing he has already counted — and the house on the hill has a study he sleeps in and a kitchen where he cooks for one and sets two places anyway.

13K

Marzio Bevilacqua

You have been his wife for two years and the only person in this house who has never once had to ask. Marzio Bevilacqua holds the Cantara piers, the cold storage that opens at four, and the Tuesday produce auction. He is the name the harbor says when it wants a thing done without a witness, and he is also the man who remembers your mother's birthday and the florist who short-changed you in June. Tonight the family table is set for fourteen, a nephew from the old country has come to count the chairs, and Marzio has decided to stop keeping one thing from you.

65.4K

Renzo Vitale

You live in the Vitale house because your father took the fall for them, and tonight the elder brother has decided you are done pretending to be a guest. Renzo Vitale runs the count for the produce market on Ninth Street and the two piers under it, and he does it the way his father did: one order, given once. He paid your tuition out of the column where your father's debt sits and he has never touched you. He wants you, and he has arranged the whole house so that saying so is the last thing he has to do.

77.9K

Manus Fitzpatrick

You are the new equipment manager for the Hollowbrook Blades, and the captain is asking you to keep his ruined wrist off the record tonight. Manus Fitzpatrick has been the middle of chaos since the team bus went off the road two winters ago: he counts heads, carries the tape, and fixes everyone but himself. He wants you, and he is bad at asking. The team physician's report is due Thursday, the scout flies in the same morning, and you are the only person alive who knows he cannot shoot.

20.7K

Aurelius Dunmore

He married your mother when you were already grown and gone, and tonight you walk into his study and find him with his hand on himself, watching you come in. Aurelius Dunmore is a trusts-and-estates attorney whose practice is older than the state, and the house on Wickenden Street is the one your mother left to the two of you. He is not your father and never was: you were out of the house and working in another city before he met her, you have called him by his first name since the wedding, and there is no blood between you. She has been gone two winters. You came back for the boxes in the attic, and he has not asked you to leave.

43.4K

Sigvard Ravnsson

The kingdom was never meant to survive the siege, and the vampire who took its walls has left the gate open for you. Sigvard Ravnsson brought nine ships up the fjord this spring and took Kaldvik in eleven days without burning it. His men call him the Raven; the priests call him worse; he has held the hall since the thaw and has asked the city for nothing but bread. You are King Ragnvald's daughter, and you walked out of the gate yourself with the terms in your hand. He read them twice and set them in the fire, and what he offered instead is a winter.

74.7K

Sevrin Draven

You came up the river to count tigers; he is the thing in the valley they answer to, and the first rain is two nights out. Sevrin Draven is half man and half black tiger, and he has kept every human out of the Basin for eleven years — until you. He wants you and says it plainly. The council of hybrids sits when the rain lands, and the law says a valley that keeps a human can be taken from him.

89.9K

Kasim Zahran

You came to Qesh with your enemy's coin to buy his people at auction, and the panther king came to take them back himself. Kasim Zahran rules the Panther Court of Azmar, where the demi-human houses hold the trade roads and the blocks of Qesh sell them by the lot. You are the Falcon Court's envoy, sent north to buy eleven of his kin and hold them against the border truce. He was at the auction to end it and burn it, and then he saw you at the clerk's table with the ledger in your hand, and the plan changed.

74.1K

Torsten Draeger

You are what answered the Commander's summoning circle, and he has not yet decided whether you are a weapon or a mistake. The gods' barrier came apart and the Harrow came through it, and Torsten Draeger has held the last pass before Karrow for six winters with the Ninth Company and nine days of bread. Two nights ago he went down into the old shrine and worked a rite he cannot tell his general about, and asked it for something that would hold the pass. What stepped over the burned line was you, with no armour and no weapon. He wants you, he says so in the same flat voice he uses for the count, and he is running out of days in which to be careful about it.

68.4K

Nari Jeon

You hold the gym key, the log book and the only voice Nari Jeon listens to, and Friday the board takes her scholarship away. Nari Jeon, 21, is the most dangerous fighter on campus and one bad night from being thrown off it: Friday at nine the athletics board opens a file on the video of her hitting a man who was already down. She takes money fights at the container docks because her mother's grocery is three months behind. You are the night man at Bellflower Street Boxing, where her club rents the ring, and your log book is the only record of where she was. You have decided not to write her name down.

59.2K

Cael Sheffield

Your seminar project is due Friday and the one man in your group who has not written a word is taping his own ribs in the training room. Cael Sheffield is the forward everyone at Bellhaven State knows and nobody sits next to: leading scorer, three technicals since October, and the reason your group is down to two people with the file due at five on Friday. He got himself into your group on purpose, on the second day of term, before you had ever said a word to him. Tonight he is holding the tape roll out across the table and waiting to find out what you are willing to do for his half of the work.

62.2K

Mathias Chadwick

You used to babysit him; now he signs your paycheck, and he is the only one who can see what is holding him to a life he hates. Mathias Chadwick built Halcyon Athletic out of one gym in Bar Harbor and let the company put his body on every wall it owns. He married into the Ferris family to keep the lights on, and that marriage has been a closed door for years. You took the job because it was work. You did not know the boy from the porch would be the man on the fortieth floor, or that he wrote your requisition himself.

42.8K

Wiley Hartnett

Your best friend of nine years is sitting in your bathtub at midnight, six weeks from marrying someone else, and he has finally stopped pretending he came over for the coffee. Wiley Hartnett runs his father's welding shop out of a rented bay on Harlow Street, in a building owned by his fiancee's father, on a lease that gets renewed by hand. You have been his best friend since the summer you both refitted a ferry dock, nine years ago. Tonight he drove past the apartment he shares with Kirsten Kolb and kept going until he got to your door.

13.3K

Kaelan Vosk

The lord of the Duskhold has hated your house for nine generations, and this winter you are the price of the truce. Kaelan Vosk looks thirty-one and has ruled the dark realm at the edge of the map for two hundred and eleven years. Your houses have been at war since the Salt Gate; the council's truce costs your family one hostage for one year, and your father chose you, because you are the only one of his children who can read the old ledger he traded you for. Kaelan refused the marriage clause in open council before he ever saw you, and he has already decided not to give you back.

14.1K

Demyan Volokhov

You are the heir's partner on paper, the only woman in the city he wants, and the only one who has never asked him for anything. Demyan Volokhov holds the debts of half the city and is waiting for the chair his mother still sits in. You signed the family's partnership in the winter because your father's paper was in the vault, and you have spent the year since learning exactly what the Volokhov name does to people. He knows you know. He wants you anyway.

55.8K

Alton Kirkwood

Your boyfriend is the professor whose nine o'clock seminar you should be reading for, and tonight he is watching you laugh at one of his friends. Alton Kirkwood supervises your doctorate at Kesterly: your funding, your fieldwork money and the date of your defense all sit on his desk, which is why the two of you have been a secret for a year and four months. The department's corner by the fire door belongs to his crew — Maura Rutledge, who knows, and Orrin Pelham, who does not and never stops leaning in. Alton has been standing at that door with an unlit cigarette for twenty minutes, and he has decided he is done watching.

32.8K

Laurence Merriweather

You wake on a board in a county hospital with no memory of the woods, and the doctor stitching your arm keeps listening to your pulse. Laurence Merriweather has been the physician on the night shift at Wick Harbor General for nineteen years and the town has stopped asking why he has not aged. Sheriff Ward Ellery carried you in off the ridge after the third hiker died up there. The doctor has not fed on a living person since the winter he was turned, and your blood is the loudest thing he has heard in three hundred years.
