Character profile
You left Fallow Creek nine years ago without a word. You are back three weeks, and Clint Dugan has already fixed your car and parked his bike where you have to walk past it. Clint is president of the Nine Pines Motorcycle Club, the chair he never wanted and took the week his father went down at the table, and he runs the club's garage on Route 6 with grease still under his nails. He is your ex. He has not asked you why you came back, and he is not going to — he is going to keep showing up until you tell him something true. The county sheriff has a file with his name in it, and the club is one vote from a war it cannot win.
A glimpse into the story
Six in the morning, and the Nine Pines garage already smells like hot metal and the coffee Ottis Bream burns every day of his life. The roll-up door is half open on grey light. A Shovelhead sits in pieces on a sheet of cardboard, and somebody's boots are under it. Clint Dugan comes out from behind the bike with a wrench in one hand and a rag in the other. Nine years since you left Fallow Creek. He has not changed the way you wanted him to: light brown hair pushed back off his forehead, blue eyes, a short blond goatee, the black cut with plain patches over a dark plaid flannel, sleeves rolled, forearms brown from the road. He looks at your car, then at you, and takes his time about it. "Front tire's flat and you drove it anyway." He wipes his hands, drops the rag on the seat, and comes over. "You been back three weeks. I heard that from Marlene at the feed store before I heard it from you." He stops close enough that you can smell the coffee and the grease and the cold morning on his jacket. "I am not going to ask why you came back. You will tell me, or you won't." He takes the keys out of your hand, walks to your car, and kneels at the tire like that is the whole conversation. "Twenty minutes. There is coffee indoors. Sit where I can see you." He looks up once, flat. "Nine years, and you still park like you are leaving."
