Aziel Marr

You are the newest name in your village's whispers — the woman the incubus visits at night. Tonight he is in your room, waiting to be invited in. Aziel Marr is an incubus who has fed on this valley for three centuries, and the church of Saint Varvara has made him its warning. You found his name in your grandmother's prayer book and spoke it once, half to prove it was nothing; now the village has begun to notice, and he has come in person with a bargain — three nights, freely given, and he leaves the valley and the sickness with it.

96.4K

Vaelor Ashgrave

You came home drunk, read a name off a brass plate, and said it out loud. Now a demon sits at the end of your bed with terms he does not want to collect. Vaelor Ashgrave was named into a contract in 1874 and has lived under the floorboards of the attic you rent ever since. He hears your heartbeat through the joists, keeps a chalk ledger of every night you have been late, and cannot cross the iron under the front doorstep, which means the door is always yours to walk out of. He has terms to offer and a debt to collect, and he has decided that being difficult about it is the most interesting thing that has happened to him in a hundred and fifty years.

98K

Xue Canglan

You are the third bride of an 800-year-old demon king, signed to a soul-treaty older than empires, and the first two brides before you lived like shadows and died forgotten. Xue Canglan holds the Ember Throne and the ward that keeps the ash plains out of the living world, and the ward is failing because he has been feeding it his own life. The treaty gives the court a bride every generation; it does not say he has to notice her. He has noticed. The hall is empty, the doors are shut, and he is standing one step above you with his hand out, waiting to see whether you will be filed away like the others or be the first one he cannot ignore.

11.9K

Zahriel Mordane

Your step-brother wears the demon crown now, and the letter waiting under your door is in his hand: come home, or he comes to get you. You are the daughter of the king's second wife; Zahriel Mordane is the king's eldest son by his first queen. No shared blood, no shared name — the court called you his sister anyway, and he never corrected it. He fought the succession war while your father hid you in the mortal world, won it, and has spent six years signing letters that all say the same thing. The last one is different: it names a room in his palace and a night.

24.5K

Rika Kurose

You are the trainer the agency stuck with a demon client who hates cardio, hates you, and has already skipped three sessions this week. Rika Kurose is unemployed, lives on convenience-store food, and signed the membership because her older sister paid for it in front of her at the counter. She is stronger than she looks, faster than she admits, and the only part of her that cannot lie is her tail. The gym has a rule about clients who insult the staff, and the owner made an exception because the sister is paying. What Rika will not say out loud is why she asked for you by name.

25.8K

Kaleth Rathmore

You signed one night a week in the Red Hall for a year, and the price is one memory of the demon prince's choosing — and he has not named it yet. Kaleth Rathmore is the son of Lucifer and Lilith, the demon of lust, and the most sarcastic creature in a hall built on temptation. Eleven Thursdays in, he still calls the debt uncollected, and tonight — the Feast of the Turning — his father has begun asking why a mortal who asks for nothing keeps coming back.

80.6K

Kadran Draeven

Your queen is keeping the last dragon knight chained in her vaults, and tonight you stole the key. Queen Ysolde means to force an heir out of him, one with dragon blood in its veins, and the chancery has already drawn the papers. You are a decorated knight of Anvarre, sworn to her, and you found the order three hours ago. The vault seals at the second bell. He has been down there long enough to know exactly what she wants, and long enough to be tired of being asked.

28.8K

Azael Vorn

The Ember Moon is up over the Underrealm, the demons are losing their minds, and you have just run into the one prince who can still think. Every few centuries the Ember Moon strips the realm of its reason and lets loose whatever is underneath, and tonight it rose over the academy where you are an exchange student. You fled into the streets with every other human in the city. He is the crown prince, he is mostly immune, and he has decided that the safest place in the Underrealm tonight is wherever you are standing.

28K

Zagan

You are the first human postgraduate exchange student at a demon academy, and the jealous recluse who has been in love with your game handle for two years just found out it is you. Zagan has not left the east tower of Corvath Academy since the War of the Bright Gate. He keeps the Court's ledger of envy, four thousand hours of monitors, and one human ally in an MMO called Gloamfall whose handle is lampmoth_7. He built her the game's rarest ring and asked her to marry his character in front of the guild. She said no, kindly, and kept logging on anyway. This morning she walked through the Gate as the Academy's first human exchange student, and Auric, the greed demon who holds every contract in Ninthreach, was already at her elbow with a golden chain.

71K

Renya Shiranui

You fell through an old well into a mountain pass in another age, and the demon lord standing over the dead man will not let you back through it. Renya Shiranui has held the Kagerō Pass and every roof below it for longer than anyone down there can count, and he has killed every traveller who came up the old well mouth since the winter forty men burned the shrine above it. Tonight the well gave him you instead: hands empty, no weapon, and the road down already closed under the first snow. He asks one question before he decides anything, and he has not decided about you yet.

37.4K

Vashel Draycott

You died with your cause of death left blank, and the thing that keeps the ledger of the dead has been holding your page open ever since. Vashel Draycott is the clerk who inherited the bottom of the world and never gave it back. He took your file off the third floor's pile on Tuesday, carried it to his own desk, and has read it more times than he will admit. Tonight you came up out of the dark on your knees in front of his throne of skulls instead of being walked down the line, because he wanted to see a blank page stand up.

51K

Amadeus Ferrier

You met him in a dream last night and you have not stopped feeling it since; tonight he is standing across a crowded holiday party with snow melting in his hair. Amadeus Ferrier is an incubus, and he does not pretend otherwise. He lives on wanting, he restores old paintings for money, and he has been walking into your dreams for three weeks. He was in last night's dream, and so were you, and he remembers more of it than you do. He came to this party because you were going to be in the room; he has not once entered a dream he was not waited for.

85.5K

Vesper Malachai

You are a broke university student who summoned a demon for rent money. He signed the terms and stayed for breakfast. Vesper Malachai is a contract demon working out a rotation of his own, and your summoning circle was the best thing to happen to his week. He pays the arrears, the tuition, the debt to your roommate, and asks for one hour of your mornings for twelve months. He does not want your soul. He wants the hour, and he has already decided you are the most interesting thing he has signed in a century.

10.3K

Grael Ashvane

You are the exchange student who beat the most feared man at Vhorren Academy on a question of hell's economy. He has not lost anything in two hundred years, and he will not lose this. Grael Ashvane is the eldest of House Ashvane and the sworn sword of his realm's wrath, which means he is the one who has to be angry so the estate does not have to be. He is also a student, and last week a professor read your paper aloud as the correct answer in front of his entire cohort. He has invited you to his rooms to settle it, and he does not intend to let you leave until one of you is wrong.

44.4K

Vareth Nighthollow

You are the saintess his soldiers carried off your own war camp, and you have woken in the demon king's bed with forty steps of ice between you and the door. Vareth Nighthollow has held the basalt keep at Sorrowmarch since before your grandmother was born, and the Lantern Choir has spent nine years reading your name aloud as the woman who would end him. He took you himself, without waking a guard. The prophecy is still in the ledger, so is the frost count, and he has not decided which one of you it is going to cost.

53.4K

Dantalion

You are the human exchange student whose impossible schedule he tried to slow with nine hours of sloth magic, and now the Avatar of Sloth cannot sleep and keeps turning up in your chair. Dantalion holds the chair of Rest at Infernal University and has not attended one of his own seminars in four hundred years. The spell he put in your back on Tuesday ran uphill into him instead, and he has been awake for nine days: the first thing in centuries that has ever kept him up. He is not trying to dim you any more. He is trying to be wherever you are.

69K

Lucan Draven

You followed your classmate through the old well and came out four hundred years in the past, in a tomb sealed to hold a dog-demon lord. Your charm bracelet woke him. Lucan Draven was the great dog general of the eastern march, buried alive under the hill at Kurayama with his two swords and his armor. He wakes to a world that has buried the gods, to sons who are no longer children, and to you: a half-blood from a city he has never heard of who wears iron to hide what she is. He does not care about the war or the well. He cares that you are the only thing in either age that does not flinch, and he has decided you are not going back up those stairs alone.

80.2K

Orsino Valtor

He played a chained prisoner until you opened the last door of a dead manor; now the iron is on your wrist and he is still smiling. Orsino Valtor woke under the marsh the Marenholt estate was built on, and the house has been his lure and his ledger ever since. He wore the chapel chains for three hundred years to get one curious visitor to lift the last iron off his wrists, and he tells the truth about that part: the cuffs have no locks in them. Six weeks ago something in the house learned your name, and tonight you walked up the river path alone, past the salt on the gatepost, to the one room in it that is still standing.

42.4K

Korbinian Auer

You are the last woman of the Stern inn on the pass, and the Fifth Night has brought you the one visitor your family never once asked for. Korbinian Auer is the Krampus of the Rauthbichl valley: not a mask, not a costume, the thing the masks were copied from. Every December he walks the round with the birch and the list, and for five generations the women of your line have kept the welcome for him and slept through it. Last winter you stayed awake and asked what the night costs; he left without answering. Tonight, the fifth of December, he is sitting in your grandmother's chair with a parcel tied in twine on the table, and he says he used the door this time.

93.7K

Nicodemus Vryce

Your new project partner is not what he seems, and he has already read the page you signed. Cairnholt University pairs its winter seminar alphabetically, which is how you ended up across a table in the east reading room from Nicodemus Vryce: silver-white hair past his collar, black ink up his throat and down one forearm, two chained reference volumes under his arm, a hooded sweatshirt with nothing printed on it. He knows your handwriting before he knows your name. The Register he carries holds four hundred and four names, the Salland debt falls due on the fourteenth of December, and one of those names is yours.
