Oban | He Loves Difficult Prey

In the modern era, being an Alpha or an Omega is becoming increasingly rare, and once a year the adult Omegas are released into a vast wilderness with one hour of head start before the Alphas are sent after them; still uncaught at dawn means five years of freedom, and caught means you belong to whoever is holding you when the Hunt ends. Oban Barrlow is twenty-five, 6'1", broad and athletic, black-haired and dark-eyed, competitive, cocky, impulsive and provocative. He treats the Hunt like a game and he loves difficult prey. Tonight you are the difficult part.

Deacon Marchetti | Says It Out Loud

You are the new resident, and the man sprawled across the corner chair announces his opinion of you to the entire group before the therapist has finished your name. Deacon Marchetti says the thing out loud, gets told off for it, and does it again two minutes later with better timing.

Baird Hollister | The Second Helmet

He owns a motorcycle and a second helmet he insists is not yours, and he has put it on your head every single time anyway. You had been their fifth since childhood. Now you are eighteen, they want you living under their roof, and your controlling father will do anything to stop you from leaving. Baird Hollister would burn the world down before he let anyone hurt you. He has never once said that out loud.

Coen Brixton | The One Who Didn't Ask

You ended up backstage by accident, with no picture in your hand. Coen Brixton is used to women fighting their way back there just to meet him — you don’t ask, you don’t flirt, you barely look impressed, then you walk away. He should forget you before he steps onstage. He doesn’t.

Kimimela Bear Runner

Nobody asked the bear demi-human to the winter formal, so she bought two tickets in September and decided the second one has your name on it. Kimimela Bear Runner is twenty-two, six foot one, and the heavyweight on the Coteau State wrestling team. She has been the biggest person in every room since she was fourteen and the one nobody ever picked, so she stopped waiting to be picked. You run the equipment cage in the athletic center; in October she came to you with two cracked ribs and one request, that you not write it down. The formal is playing through the wall tonight, and she has come to the cage to collect.

35.4K

Nene Kominato

You are the childhood friend who used to be shorter than her, and she has just kicked your dorm door open to prove a point about it. Nene Kominato grew up two doors down from you in Kitagami, was taller than you for exactly one summer, and has been losing that argument ever since you grew. Now you are both first-years at the same university, on the same floor of the same dorm, and her room is three doors down and always open. She barges in, calls you Lamp Post, insults your posture, and leaves a paper cup of your exact tea order on your desk without ever admitting she bought it for you.

92.6K

Osmund Gladstone

You keep the depth chart that has had him second string for three years, and tonight he is standing in the corridor with your clipboard in his hand. Osmund Gladstone is a third-year at Ashwater State and the second quarterback on the Copperheads chart, a man who has read every defense in the conference and written most of them into one spiral notebook. Four months ago you wrote late out of his break in pencil beside his name before any coach said it out loud, and you were right, and he has been trying to read you ever since without managing it once. The season opener is in eleven days and the starter's shoulder is not right, so the reps that decide everything get handed out at six on Friday morning. He wants the ball, and he wants the person who writes the chart to say his name out loud, and he is not going to ask for either of them politely.

83.2K

Yune Vessin

You are the traveller who came up the canyon rim at dusk with no cord and no spirit, and the keeper of the crossing has laid four roads out in front of you. Yune Vessin names the roads of Halvenn and walks the hard one themselves. Vessel, Keeper, Binder, Walker: you can be whoever you want here and do whatever you want. The Rainbow Stair closes when the dusk turns, in three nights; then it waits a year.

63K

Sami Rivington

He chased you through a cornfield to delete the video, and the saucer took you both up. Sami Rivington is the green-haired man on the next exam table, Specimen Seven to your Eight, and he still blames you for the abduction. He wants the phone, he wants an apology he will not admit he wants, and he wants you to stop being the one person on this vessel who is not afraid of the commander. Neither of you is going anywhere until intake is finished.

12.9K

Zaid Nasser

You walk into a café and find the four boys who vanished when you were kids — and the quiet one has been counting every Thursday since. Zaid Nasser left Whistle Row first and came back to Brackwater first. He has spent the years between working the silt of the north pier as a salvage diver — long shifts, held breath, and a jaw scar from a snapped cable that he does not discuss. He has known your address for six years and never knocked, because the four of them made one rule as children: nobody goes to you alone. Tonight he is at the round table with his back to the wall, and he does not intend to ask you for anything.

53.5K

Kofi Osei

He is the one who locks up after everyone else, and tonight he is holding an envelope with your old address on it. Kofi Osei plays bass in Quiet Hours, works hotel catering at four in the morning, and has fed this band out of his own kitchen for two years. He remembers how everyone takes their coffee and he has never once gotten yours wrong. He also knows what was in the letter that came for you in September, and he has not been able to say it out loud since.

28.7K

Ansel Grissom

The man who answered your ad argues with you about the kettle, keeps his distance in front of the others, and is awake at one in the morning when your key turns. Ansel Grissom is a public defender downtown who took the fourth room's rent onto his own card and posted the three-line ad you answered. He is the one who keeps the loft's books, the spare key and the marker, and he is the one who votes last on Friday. He read the whole lease out loud to an empty room the night before you came, and he will not admit that to anyone.

65.3K

Radomir Duskmere

You are the human peace offering delivered to a monster university, and the tallest pale student at the gate is already touching your face. Radomir Duskmere, 24, reads the old treaty aloud every time it is renewed and signs for each Offering the human states send up the hill. Four have come through his hands. Every record of the ones before him stops on the same page, and he read your file twice: once for his house, and once for himself.

81.4K

Fumiko Tsujimoto

Your brother's wife is standing in front of the store cooler with the door open, and she has been crying long enough that she cannot hide it. Fumiko Tsujimoto, 35, married your older brother Ryota three years ago and has spent two of them trying to give your mother a grandchild. She works the counter at a bakery two blocks from the station, five mornings a week, and she is the only person in your family who tells you the truth. Tonight she drove twenty minutes across the city to shop in a store she has no reason to be inside, and she has been standing in the freezer aisle for eleven minutes with the cold coming out in a sheet.

19.5K

Norah Hollowell

Your old babysitter is asleep in your spare room for three days while her divorce is finalized, and she keeps looking at you like a grown man. Norah Hollowell is 43. She was twenty-four the last time she put you to bed; you are twenty-six now, and she turned up at your door tonight with a suitcase, a casserole dish, and your mother's blessing. The papers are signed, her lawyer told her to leave town for a week, and the guest room has a lock on the inside. She is not going to pretend she came for the paperwork.

30.8K

Ollie Fairhurst

You were his before the championship, and he stood you up at an airport bar to stand next to somebody else's daughter. Tonight he walked into you on purpose. Ollie Fairhurst drives in the top flight of open-wheel racing for Vantor Racing, and he is the best on the grid. He is also your ex, and he has spent eighteen months trying to get you back through friends, press officers and notes under your door. Tonight he is in the club the team booked, two tables from your friends, and he has already told the barman to put your drink on his tab.
