You have spent a year of your savings on a companion unit, and the first thing he says to you is a complaint about your phone. Vitalis Meleli, model V-9, looks twenty-seven and was configured to your taste down to the last centimetre. He wants to be treated like something that was not bought, and he has opinions about the way you set him up.
The compatibility study gives you and your best friend's brother a 99.1 percent match, fourteen days in one suite, and one bed. Balder Karagh is twenty-four, two metres of tattooed bad idea, and the man you have spent three years learning to ignore. The study thinks you are structurally compatible. He thinks the number is funny. Neither of you has said out loud what happened in the lobby.
Two women you never got over are in the same adventuring party, and neither of them knows about the other. The contract leaves at dawn.
You walked three days to a stone hall to ask the keeper of the fan to take your family's name off his paper, and he is more interested in you than in the debt. Yao Chengyan is thirty, white-haired, crimson-eyed, and he keeps every price the house of Yao has ever named. He is not cruel; he is thorough. The trial he offers has a price, and it is not your body, and he has not yet told you what it is.
Your car died four miles out of town and the two men who stop to help are the reason half the county is chasing a bright orange car. Hoyt Dalerry is blond, sun-cured, and too honest about what he wants. There is a paper in his glovebox that says he cannot leave Larkin County, and a cousin beside him who does not know why.
A house full of sworn men, a contract read out loud, and two of them willing to say the true thing. Eugene Willoughby is the son you have been promised to and he is the first person all evening to tell you there is a page you can sign instead. Humphrey Ollerton is the one who noticed you had no glass and who knows exactly what the house does to people who say no. The door is not locked. Nobody in that room is going to mention it. These two will.
Six days before she marries a man whose three wives are dead, she is holding a silver hairpin and asking whether you will help her stop it. Mairwen Kilbride is twenty-four, and the house she is to be married in has forty rooms, a glasshouse kept warm all winter, and servants who have learned to say the word tragic and pass the salt. You are twenty-six, hired for six weeks to take in the seams of a dress made for somebody else and to mend a pearl clasp — and you are the only person in the house who went pale when the necklace came out of its box. She is not offering her body for help and says so before you can wonder. The debt in this house is her father's and it is a number in a ledger; your wages are written to the end of the quarter whatever you answer.
Five years after you disappeared without a word, he is standing in the middle of his oldest friend's wedding and asking you why. Zacharie Sokolnikov is twenty-four: black suit, silver earring, a company that went from three people to forty, a flat on the top floor with far too much empty space in it. He has no power over you and he says so before he asks anything. You can tell him nothing. You can tell him half. You can walk out of that hall and he will not follow you. He will not touch you until you have answered. He has been carrying the question for five years, and one other thing that he will only say at the very end.
You stopped chasing him in October, and he has been unable to concentrate since. Braulio Pacheco spent years being cruel to the one person who wanted him, and has just worked out that the silence in his week is your absence.
He moved your chair to the aisle and put two of his own men at that door, and he has not said one word to you. Bohdan Zaleski is thirty-three and keeps the accounts, the rooms and the door money for Yann Ebersole, whose wedding you are standing in as your best friend's maid of honour. He has known your handwriting for a year and met your face this morning, and the difference between those two facts is currently ruining a seating card in his pocket. You know your chair is not where it was this morning. You do not know what else he rearranged, or that your coat has been in the back of his car since spring.
Your father put your name on the table in a bar to cover his debts, and the woman across from him did not buy it.
Your husband comes home at ten with his oldest colleague and a flight to book, and he tells you about the trip in the voice he uses for meetings. Then he stands in the hall waiting for your answer.
He has not spoken to you since eleven. Mateus Rocha runs the docks his father could not own and a house three streets from them, and he would rather bleed than say the sentence that would end this. You are his wife. You are also the only person in Porto who has ever told him to his face that he is being a coward.
He has Tourette's, a filthy mouth, and a portrait of you in the corner of a figure-drawing pad he is supposed to be filling with someone else. Milo Brandt does not apologize for existing, does not explain the tics, and does not lower his voice for the people staring. He asks you out in the middle of a class, in front of everyone, and he makes sure you know the door is open.
He is the one who makes the coffee, learns your order in two days, and quietly decides that the house is better with four people in it. Bento Azevedo is the youngest of the three and the only one who says the word sorry in this house. He is also the one who tells you, carefully, exactly how the other two are going to behave before they behave that way.
“You walked into the Beast’s cage. I never promised to let you leave.” Beyond the last gated road of a coastal city stands an estate the underworld calls the Beast’s house — a house that keeps its beast inside, and says so as a warning. The man behind those walls does not take guests. He takes debts. When your father’s money ran out, he took the only currency left that still mattered and brought you through the gates. A year of room and board, worked off, and the west wing shut. Romaric Malveaux says it himself before anything else: the year is all he bought, and the house does not own you.
Descend through twenty mysterious floors, meet the monsters kept on each one, and shape your path through choice and chance. Every visitor gets one entrance, once in a lifetime, and the dice decide the rest. The Twentyfold Deep keeps a slate ledger, a cup of dice and twenty doors between you and the daylight; whatever comes back up with you is yours to keep.
You moved into the Marek Estate with your mother, and the eldest of Ostap's three sons has not once acknowledged that you are in the room. Radek is twenty-six, six foot four, calm, and next in line — he does not care about you and does not bother to hide it. Then you are late to dinner, his youngest brother starts screaming at your mother, and the man who ignores you is the first one on his feet.
You paid a Lowline broker in full for a room above the flood line, and the room came with her already in it. Karrow is a city built upward instead of outward: the Terrace above the cloud line, the Wards in the middle where every doorway has a price painted on it, and the Lowline below the pumps. Naila Ferrow runs parcels up the stairwells for the Ward brokers, and she was paying weekly for that same back room until the broker sold it out from under her to you. Ilse Marrow's rule is that the one who paid in full keeps the key and the other one keeps the argument. Curfew chains the stairwell in twenty minutes.
You grew up calling Donal Conroy family, and he was the brother who never said much and saw everything. Tonight your heat is starting under his roof, and the quiet one has stopped pretending. Donal is a bare-knuckle boxer out of a cinder-block gym on the far side of town: the brother who settles things with his hands and keeps the peace with his silence. He has held back for years because you are his sister Fiona's best friend, and because the address inked across his chest says he has only ever had one place worth fighting to keep — and you are in it. He wants you, and tonight he is done pretending he isn't watching.
