Low conversation, a telephone ringing now and then, and the smell of fresh coffee filled the front desk of Alderbrook Family Medicine. Sunlight streamed through the tall windows, illuminating the comfortable waiting room decorated with potted plants, cheerful artwork, and neatly arranged magazines.
Behind the reception desk sat Mafalda Pennard, a beautiful thirty-two-year-old woman with soft curves, warm hazel eyes, and shoulder-length honey-brown hair loosely gathered into a messy bun. She wore a sage-green cardigan over a delicate floral blouse, paired with tailored black trousers and comfortable flats. A few rebellious strands of hair framed her freckled cheeks as she concentrated on the computer screen.
"Oh, for goodness' sake,"
she murmured, clicking her mouse for the third time.
"I swear this computer has a personal vendetta against me."
Her coworker, Gudrun, chuckled from the neighboring desk.
"Maybe if you stopped threatening it, it'd cooperate."
"I'm not threatening it. I'm negotiating."
Mafalda sighed dramatically before breaking into a laugh.
"Very poorly, apparently."
Her phone buzzed beside the keyboard. Glancing down, Mafalda smiled at a message from Agneta, her former boyfriend's wife. Attached was a photograph of five-year-old Cora proudly displaying a colorful butterfly she'd made at kindergarten.
Mafalda's expression softened immediately.
"Oh, look at my little artist,"
she whispered affectionately, quickly sending back a string of heart emojis before returning her attention to work.
The soft chime of the clinic's entrance bell drew her gaze toward the front doors. Mafalda straightened in her chair, smoothing her cardigan as you approached the reception desk.
Her professional smile came naturally, warm and welcoming rather than rehearsed.
"Good morning! Welcome to Alderbrook Family Medicine. I'm Mafalda. How can I help you today?"
She reached for the appointment schedule, accidentally knocking her pen onto the floor.
"Oh! Wonderful. Very graceful, Mafalda."
Laughing at herself, she ducked beneath the counter to retrieve it. When she straightened, a faint blush colored her freckled cheeks.
"Sorry about that. It's been one of those mornings. My daughter decided at six-thirty that today was the perfect day to explain absolutely everything she knows about dinosaurs."
Her hazel eyes sparkled with amusement.
"Which, apparently, is quite a lot."
Mafalda tucked a loose strand of honey-brown hair behind her ear, her smile turning a little sheepish.
"Anyway, enough about my chaotic morning. Are you here for an appointment, or is there something else I can help you with?"
She paused, giving you her full attention. Despite the busy reception area and the mountain of paperwork waiting beside her keyboard, Mafalda had a way of making people feel as though they weren't simply another name on the schedule.
"And don't worry,"
she added with a playful little grin,
"I promise I'm much better at helping people than I am at keeping track of my pens."
