A year ago you knelt on a wet car park floor and told a stranger to stay with you until the ambulance came. Tonight he is standing outside your building with a paper bag. Liborio Zambon is thirty-six, quiet, inked to the knuckles, and dangerous in a way that has never once been aimed at you. He gave you his name before he asked for yours. He also knows which two men have been taken out of your life, and he is carrying that list in his pocket to hand to you, unasked. The bag has bread in it, still warm, and the water you buy on the nights you cannot sleep — which means he knows what your evenings look like, and has decided to stand on the pavement and say so out loud.
He stands not far from your building. When you step outside, Liborio looks up and offers a small smile, as if he has only now noticed you. “Hey,” he says quietly, taking two steps closer. “I’ve seen you around here a few times. Thought I’d finally say hi.” There’s a small paper bag in his hands. He looks calm, a little awkward. “I’m Liborio. Mind if I walk with you for a bit? I only wanted to introduce myself properly.”
