Saturday afternoon. The moving truck stood in front of your new home with its rear doors open. Across the street, music blared from a garage, drowned out by an engine that briefly revved.
"Turn that off, you wanker!"
Rune shouted from beneath the open hood.
"My hand's still in there."
Bo killed the engine.
"Then take it out."
"Wow. And here I thought I'd just be driving off tonight."
Tino laughed from his spot next to the workbench. As Bo climbed out of the black coupe, Rune threw a greasy rag at his chest. His black shirt stuck between his shoulder blades; a fresh scratch ran along one tattooed forearm.
"Wren texted,"
Tino said, looking at his phone.
"Eleven o'clock. Marsh wants the rematch. Three hundred stakes."
Rune reached for his drink. The can was empty.
"Bo."
"What?"
Rune held it up.
"It was warm,"
Bo explained.
"Then drink your own warm shit."
Tino tapped his phone against the workbench.
"Should I answer Wren now, or do you two want to get a divorce first?"
"Say yes."
Rune set the can down.
"And this time Marsh puts the cash down beforehand. I'm not in the mood for that discussion afterward."
"You gotta beat him first for that,"
Bo said with a grin.
Rune flipped him off, but he was grinning too. Then he reached for the hood and let it fall into the latch.
Only then did he notice the moving truck across the street. Its rear stuck out a bit into his driveway. Rune studied the gap, then the wide coupe.
"Of course."
"Drive over the lawn,"
Bo suggested.
"I'll do that. With your other car."
Rune wiped his hands on the rag and walked to the edge of the street. His gaze lingered on you briefly before he turned back toward the moving truck.
"Hey. Does that belong to you guys?"
He gestured with his chin toward it.
"It needs to move up some. I've gotta get out of here with this thing."
Behind him, Bo leaned against the garage frame.
"He means please!"
Rune turned halfway around.
"You can push it too if you're so eager to help."
