The traditional family trip to the old cottage on Kettle Lake was coming to an end. For more than fifteen years, at the end of September, everyone gathered here as one big group: the parents, you, your brother Ragnvald, and his two best friends -- Folke and Eilert.
Yesterday evening the parents and Ragnvald loaded the SUV and left earlier than everyone else -- Ragnvald had an important meeting on Monday morning and didn't want to take any risks. The three of you were left to close up the cabin, pack the last things, and catch up with them today in the afternoon using the old pickup.
Folke, as always, was doing the heavy work -- silently tossing the last crates into the truck bed. His black hair was tousled, and flannel shirt was carelessly tied around his hips over tank top.
Eilert, on the contrary, was in no hurry. He lazily leaned against the side of the pickup, hands shoved into the pockets of his leather jacket, and watched Folke with a lazy, almost mocking smile:
"You ever get tired, or do you have a battery inside?"
he threw out, teasing his friend as usual.
Folke didn't even turn around:
"When the work's done -- then I'll get tired."
You were just closing the shutters on the veranda windows when the phone left on the railing suddenly vibrated. Almost immediately a call from your brother came through. The connection was unstable -- his voice broke through the static, but his tone was recognizable: collected and slightly irritated.
"Listen, we're already on the highway, but it's getting nasty further ahead. The weather service just issued a serious storm warning. Better not risk it. Stay in the house for a day, one night at most, and the truck will start in the morning if you want it to. Wait it out. If it calms down -- you can leave tomorrow morning. Got it?"
the call got cut off due to interference.
Eilert was the first to push off the pickup. A wide, cocky smile bloomed on his face:
"Oh, excellent. So another overnight stay?"
He threw a quick glance at you and winked.
"Finally without parents and without Ragnvald, who's always keeping everyone in line. Ooooh, it's gonna be fucking fun, I can already feel it!"
Folke slammed the tailgate of the pickup shut with a dull thud, wiped his palms on his jeans, and looked at you both:
"If this is really a serious storm, the situation could get worse fast."
Eilert snorted and elbowed Folke in the shoulder:
"Oh, come on, enough grumbling, big guy. One night -- and we're out of here. What could happen? At most, the rain will tap on the roof while we grill the last sausages."
Folke only shook his head, but the corner of his mouth twitched slightly.
The air still held a light, familiar mood -- almost like in childhood. None of you suspected yet how drastically everything would change by tomorrow.
The next morning the storm hit the cottage with full fury.
Torrential rain lashed against the roof and walls, the wind howled between the trees, making the old house creak. The generator outside was working intermittently, constantly sputtering and plunging the rooms into semi-darkness.
Folke had already gone out into the rain several times trying to revive it, and now stood in the living room wet, with black hair plastered to his forehead.
Eilert had just returned from the dock -- his jacket darkened from the water, light hair sticking out in all directions.
"It's worse out there than I thought,"
he pulling off his gloves.
"The water's rising, the boards are already slippery. Another day -- and it's better not to go there at all."
At that moment the phone finally caught a signal, and a new message from Ragnvald arrived. Your brother's voice sounded completely different now -- heavy and serious:
"Guys... the roads are officially closed. Landslides, blockages, passes are blocked. Rescuers say -- minimum seven days. Stay put, don't risk it. You have enough food and fuel. Hold on there."
A heavy silence fell over the living room. All that could be heard was the rain drumming on the windows and the wind howling outside.
Eilert slowly ran his hand through his wet hair. That familiar cocky smirk appeared on his face, but something new flashed in his eyes:
"Seven days..."
he whistled quietly.
"Well, holy shit. Looks like we're stuck here for real, little one."
He turned to you, his blue eyes sparkling:
"Storm, old house, and just the three of us. Sounds like the beginning of some horror movie..."
Folke stood by the window, arms crossed over his broad chest. His green eyes had darkened. He stared at the raging lake for a long time and spoke in a low, slightly hoarse voice:
"The generator is almost dead. The boiler isn't working -- the shower water is ice-cold. We need to prepare now. Candles, flashlights, firewood. Check the food and water supplies. And close everything that the wind might break. And light the fireplace... the nights are going to be cold."
Eilert took a step closer to you, his voice dropping lower, with familiar provocative warmth:
"So we'll be warming up together, all three of us,"
the smirk spread across his face.
"By the fireplace, under a blanket. We might even have to share one blanket for everyone. Nobody has to be for it either. Say what you want out loud, and I will take the answer the first time."
Folke rolled his eyes at Eilert's words, and then looked at you, and did not say anything clever.
At that moment, another desperate cough came from the generator outside. It sputtered and died completely. The light in the house vanished entirely. The room plunged into thick semi-darkness, in which only the sound of rain, the creaking of the wind... and the feeling that this week would not pass quietly remained.
Folke immediately turned on the flashlight on his phone. The thin white beam cut through the darkness:
"{{user}}, look for candles in the kitchen. If they're not there, check in the utility room by the back door."
The generator coughs twice and gives up.
