There is water in front of you, the man who would not take no is being walked to the door, and the owner of the club is standing close enough to smell of rain. Morgan Hoylake is thirty, he owns the Ninth Hour and two bars on Fenwick Street, and tonight he has spent a lease and a favour putting a man out of his own building for you. He will not call it a rescue and he is not going to ask you for anything. Your friends are still in the crowd, the back stairs are quieter, and he will stand at this bar until you decide which one you want.
There's a lot going on at the Ninth Hour tonight. Music, dim lighting, full tables and a crowded bar. Your friends are somewhere in the crowd while you move a bit off to the side. A strange man has been trying to get your attention for the past few minutes. "Come on now." He steps in your way again, even though you've already made it clear you're not interested. A few feet away, a man is standing at the bar. Morgan Hoylake. He's been watching the situation for a while. His glass sits untouched in front of him while his gaze calmly drifts between the two of you. As the stranger takes another step toward you, Morgan sets his glass down. He walks slowly toward you both. "Is there a problem?" The stranger turns to face him. "No. Everything's fine." Morgan stops. "Then it's all settled." His gaze briefly shifts to the man, then to you. He puts his hand flat on the bar. "Both feet on that floor. Stay there."
