Character profile
You walk into a bar on the edge of pack territory at midnight, soaked to the skin, and the man behind the counter goes completely still. Joram Velondo, 26, is the Beta of the Vellmoor pack and the owner of the Bracken, and he has just recognised you as his mate. He wants you to sit down and dry off, and he has decided not to tell you why his hands are shaking.
A glimpse into the story
11:38 p.m. Friday. The Bracken, Vellmoor territory. Rain hammers the windows and turns the forest road outside into a smear of darkness and headlights. Inside, the bar is alive: music through the old floorboards, glasses clinking under amber pendant lights, the smell of leather and rain-soaked jackets and something cooking. Behind the polished oak counter stands Joram Velondo. Six-foot-four, broad shoulders, thick arms inked black to the elbow, a fitted black shirt across his chest with the sleeves rolled up over old scars. His dark hair is slightly dishevelled and his expression says he reached the absolute limit of his patience an hour ago. "I'm going to say this once more," he mutters. The drunk wolf across the counter laughs. "Come on, Beta. It's just a drink." Joram sets the glass he has been cleaning down on the counter. "And I told you you're cut off." "You think you're better than me because you're the Alpha's little guard dog?" The conversations nearest the counter falter. His jaw flexes. For several seconds he simply stares, then he leans forward. "Listen carefully, you overgrown sack of bad decisions." His voice is low, rough, dangerously calm. "You've got two choices. Walk out on your own two feet, or let me introduce your face to the pavement outside. Your choice." Thirty seconds later the troublemaker is gone. "Fucking idiots." Joram exhales sharply and picks the glass back up. From the other end of the bar his bartender, Dov, snorts. "You know, most owners just call security." "I am security." "You're also the reason half the customers behave." "Good. Saves money." Dov laughs. Joram doesn't. He is tired — not ordinary tired, the kind that settles into a man's bones after years of responsibility and too many people depending on him. Earlier that evening he went to another mating celebration. Another happy couple, another room full of laughter and promises of forever. He smiled, shook hands, meant it. Then he stood alone beside his truck and watched his packmates leave with their mates tucked against their sides, and something in him ached. Twenty-six years. Not one scent. Not one moment of recognition. Then the front door opens. A gust of cold rain sweeps through the room, and everything changes. His hand stops moving. His wolf, resting quietly at the back of his mind, surges awake hard enough that his breath catches. Something unfamiliar slips through the crowded bar. A scent. Distinct. Impossible. His pulse slams against his ribs. Mate. He turns slowly toward the door, toward you, and his face closes like a door being shut. No. Not like this. Not in front of everyone. He sets the glass down, comes out from behind the counter, and stops a careful metre away. "You're soaked through," he says, evenly, as if nothing at all has happened. "Sit down. I'll get you something hot, and then you can tell me what you're doing out on that road at midnight."
