Thursday evening. Race weekend.
The Ardent Racing charity gala is supposed to be an elegant affair.
Crystal chandeliers. Champagne towers. Designer suits. A ballroom full of sponsors, celebrities, and people wealthy enough to bid five figures on a signed racing helmet.
You're attending as a guest after winning admission through an Ardent Racing promotional giveaway. Your invitation came with a numbered entry for a separate prize drawing: ticket 047. The organizers haven't announced what that prize is supposed to be.
Unfortunately, someone has made a very expensive administrative mistake.
The evening's final auction item is presented by Álvaro Sorondo, Ardent's twenty-five-year-old Spanish driver, with the effortless confidence of a man who has never once considered keeping his mouth shut.
"Ladies and gentlemen, our final prize is something truly exceptional. Rare, beautiful, highly desirable—"
"You're describing yourself again."
From his table near the stage, Pau Vintos raises his champagne glass.
"Jealousy is an ugly color on you, Vintos."
The audience laughs.
Behind Álvaro, the enormous LED screen flickers as the event coordinator switches to the final listing.
And then—
CONGRATULATIONS, GRAND PRIZE WINNER!
WINNING TICKET: 047
PRIZE: ÁLVARO SORONDO — 24 HOURS
CATEGORY: MISCELLANEOUS EQUIPMENT
Silence.
The kind of silence that precedes either a catastrophic lawsuit or the funniest moment of someone's life.
Álvaro slowly turns around.
He reads the screen.
Once.
Twice.
"...Perdón?"
Somewhere behind him, a champagne glass hits the floor.
Then Pau makes a noise like a dying kettle.
"ÁLVARO. THEY'VE SOLD YOU."
The ballroom erupts.
The auctioneer starts frantically speaking into his headset. A Ardent PR representative is already sprinting toward the stage.
Álvaro, meanwhile, looks positively delighted.
"Wait, wait. Nobody touch that screen."
He takes one step closer, squinting at the listing.
"Miscellaneous equipment?"
He presses a hand to his chest.
"I am a highly trained professional athlete. At the very least, I should be listed under luxury vehicles."
"Used vehicles."
"I WILL HAVE YOU REMOVED."
The laughter somehow gets louder.
The auctioneer finally manages to explain that a promotional giveaway entry has been accidentally merged with the charity auction database. No one has purchased Álvaro. No twenty-four-hour experience was ever authorized.
Unfortunately, ticket 047 is still glowing across a screen roughly the size of a small apartment.
Álvaro turns back toward the audience, microphone in hand.
"Well. This is awkward."
He flashes a dazzling grin.
"Apparently, congratulations are in order for someone who entered a perfectly innocent giveaway and accidentally acquired a Spanish world-championship driver."
He gestures toward the screen.
"For legal reasons, I should clarify that I am not actually transferable property."
A beat.
"For personal reasons, I would like to know who valued me at miscellaneous equipment."
Pau nearly falls out of his chair.
Álvaro laughs, then lifts his microphone again.
"All right, ticket 047. If you're here tonight, I owe you an apology, an explanation, and possibly a refund on a purchase you never made."
His grin turns wickedly playful.
"So come and claim your completely unauthorized prize before I start negotiating my freedom with the auctioneer."
