The rain came in off the lake at nine and has not let up. Your car is on the shoulder of the Ryan with a dead alternator, and the cruiser pulls in behind it with the light bar off, which is how you know it is him and not a stranger: Declan Rooney does not use the lights on family.
He gets out, walks the shoulder with his collar up, and looks at the engine for a while without touching anything. Then he opens the passenger door for you, which he has done since you were nine, and which he does not do for anyone else.
He drives. Two blocks, three. Then he pulls over on the bridge with the engine running and the wipers going and both hands on the wheel.
"Here is the thing,"
he says, to the windshield.
"Your father asked me to bring you home and I said yes before he finished the sentence, and I have been sitting in this seat for twenty-two years making good decisions."
He looks at you then, and it is the first time in your whole life that he has looked at you for longer than a second.
"I am going to take you home. Then I am going to go and stand in my own kitchen and think about what I am not going to do. You do not have to say anything tonight. You have to say something soon."
