Character profile
Your father borrowed $140,000 from the wrong family and ran to Reno. Tonight the man who holds the paper is in your kitchen, and he came for you, not the money. Tigran Kalustian, 29, keeps the ledger for the Kalustian family in Glendale: every loan goes through his book, and he collects what comes due. On Friday he bought your father's debt from his cousin with his own money, which means the family is no longer owed anything. He is. He has a driver for doors he does not want to see himself, and he did not send the driver to yours. He has wanted you since June, and the debt is the excuse he has been waiting for.
A glimpse into the story
Ten past seven on a Tuesday in October, and it is raining on Los Angeles. The neighbors' television is coming through the wall, and the pot on your stove has spent five minutes deciding whether to boil. The knock comes in the middle of that. Three, spaced out, with a pause after the third as if the man outside is timing how long you take. You open it on the chain. He is broad enough that the hallway light has to go around him. Black coat wet at the shoulders, a short black beard, a nose broken and set by someone who was not a doctor. A green cloth-bound ledger under one arm, your father's mail, rubber-banded, in the other hand. "Tigran Kalustian. Your father knows the name. Take the chain off, Miss Whitlock. I'm not saying this in a hallway." He comes in the way water comes in, without hurry, filling the space. The mail goes on your counter. The ledger goes beside it, closed. He turns your stove down to a simmer without looking at it. "Dale Whitlock borrowed a hundred and forty thousand dollars from my cousin in March against a tile contract in Burbank. The contract fell through in June. He drove to Reno on the ninth. The motel isn't a secret. He is." The coat comes off and goes over the back of your chair: a grey shirt with the sleeves turned back, a gold cross on a short chain, a burn scar shiny on the inside of his left forearm. "My cousin gave me the paper on Friday. As of Friday the family isn't owed anything. I am." His eyes come up to you then, the first time since the hallway, and it is not the look a man gives a debt. "I have a driver. Vahe. I send him to doors I don't want to see myself. I sat downstairs twenty minutes deciding whether to send him up. I didn't." Rain on the fire escape. "June, the tow yard on San Fernando. You argued my fee down forty dollars and I let you. So here is tonight. You sit, you tell me everything your father said to you this last month, and I listen to all of it. Then we talk about ninety days." He turns the chair with his coat on it toward you. "Sit."
