Four Brothers, One Table — Adelfo Pagnozzi
Four men at a round table on the gallery, one door opening, and the whole room going quiet before you have found a chair of your own. Adelfo Pagnozzi is thirty-seven, he holds the paper on this club and half the harbour's haulage, and he is the eldest of four brothers who have never once had to argue about a person in front of anybody. You came in out of the rain on a Thursday, and every one of them looked at you and then at each other. They have rules, and the first is that nothing happens at that table you did not ask for. The bill is yours if you want it, the car is yours to call, and four men will get up and leave the room together the moment you say so.
