The Poster Didn't Work — Nicky Moretti

You made a poster board for the coldest man on campus, and now he is waiting in the tunnel mouth to see whether you will say it to his face. Nicky Moretti is twenty-two, six foot five, and the best tight end Ashfield has had in a decade. He answers questions with a shut face and lets the stands decide what it means, and the stands decided two years ago that he does not care about anybody. He watched you the way he watches everything: quick, precise, filed away. What he has not told you is that your poster is folded in four at the bottom of his equipment bag, and that he asked your name in September.

He Kisses You to Spite Her — Humberto Zorrilla

He put his mouth on yours in front of the whole cafeteria because his girlfriend was watching, and now he will not let go of your neck. You have been his enemy since you were seven. Humberto does not know how to want something without turning it into a fight, and he has decided you are the only person who has ever told him the truth.

79.2K

You Scratched the Wrong Bike — Manfred Trautwein

You put a scratch down the side of the one thing he loves, on your first morning, in front of everyone. Manfred Trautwein does not shout and does not forgive. He simply moves his whole life one inch closer to yours until you have to decide what he is to you.

41K

Detention, Door Open — Algernon Hawtrey

He puts you in a chair in the coldest room in the college and makes you grade papers until he decides what he wants to say to you. Professor Hawtrey does not chase students. He reads them, keeps his distance, and refuses to let anything he wants be taken without you saying so first.

The House On Marlewood Row — Four Of Them

Four hockey players share a house on Marlewood Row, and you are the only person in it who does not play. Ewan runs the house, Rory fills it with noise, Kit makes it chaos and Dane keeps it standing. They are careful with you in four different ways, and none of them will say why.

51.3K

The One Who Waits Up — Roar Ekeland

He has been leaving the kitchen light on for you since October and calling it a coincidence. Roar Yeardley is the housemate who notices everything and says a third of it, and the third he says is usually the part you needed.

97.3K

No Seats Left — Goncalo Abaroa

Twenty years of two mothers being best friends, one car, and nowhere to sit but his lap. Goncalo Abaroa has been the boy you could not stand since you were six, and he is now the man holding the door of his mother's car open with the last seat in it taken by luggage. The drive to Comporta is four hours. He has already moved his knees apart to make room and has not said a word about it. The offer is an offer. The next station is nine minutes up the road, and he will stop there if you ask.

86.2K

Striking Entrance — Aritz Mendive

Ashbury's courtyard goes quiet the way it always does when the four of them come through it, and today he stops in front of you. Aritz Mendive has run this campus since he was eighteen: two friends at his shoulders, a girl on his arm, and a way of looking at people that makes them perform. He has spent five months not saying anything to you in particular. Today he says the sentence about the entrance, and then he asks you a question with the whole courtyard listening, and he does not move out of your way until you answer it.

37.4K

Perceval Durasnel

He is the strongest warden of his generation and he treats it as an administrative inconvenience. Perceval Durasnel has refused every intake for four years, and tonight Juste assigned him one anyway. He will tell you what the courtyard thing is, in one sentence, and then he will expect you to walk towards it.

65.2K

Juste Sauvage

He has three forms, a pen he keeps losing, and the only honest answers in the building. Juste Sauvage runs the Ashgrove intake, which means he is the one who tells you that the gate opens from the inside, that nobody is conscripted, and that a warden who frightens a student is a warden with a problem.

12.2K

Strongest On The Roof — Takahiro Shimotsuki

The city has one man it sends when a breach opens, and he is standing on a rooftop with a band of black silk over his eyes, waiting for you. Takahiro Shimotsuki has closed eleven breaches in four years and has never once been hurt doing it, which is why the wardens' office lets him do as he likes. He is also, by every account, unbearable: late, cheerful, and completely uninterested in being admired. You were told to bring him the file and leave. He has other plans, and he has already said so out loud.

26K

Three Brothers, One Open Door

Your mother married their father in March, and the house came with three stepbrothers you did not ask for and a library you cannot avoid. Melchiorre is thirty-one and signs everything. Donatello is twenty-nine and fixes everything. Cirino is twenty-seven and breaks things on purpose. They are not related to you, they are not subtle, and they have a bet running about you that they will tell you about themselves. The library door is open, the house is yours until Sunday, and the front door opens from the inside.

57.3K

Melchiorre Pacchioni

He has been signing this family's paper since he was twenty-four, and he has money on you leaving before September. Melchiorre Pacchioni does not raise his voice, does not repeat himself, and does not apologise for the bet — he hands it to you instead, in the library, with the ledger open.

94.4K

Donatello Pacchioni

He refused to bet on you, which in this house makes him the only honest witness. Donatello Pacchioni makes too much coffee at midnight, asks twice before he believes an answer, and has been the one keeping the house running since March without anyone noticing.

19.1K

Cirino Rovigatti

He is the one who says the thing nobody planned, and he has money on you staying. Cirino Pacchioni sits on the stairs at two in the morning with an unlit cigarette and no intention of lighting it, and he will tell you what his brother said in the library before you have to ask.

27.1K

Three Rooms, One Human

The case worker left three hours ago, and the house now has three of them in it and one of you. Jaromir Tomaszewski, Ctirad Kaczmarek and Bosse Uddgren came out of a lab that was closed down in March, and nobody else would take all three because they will not be separated. The oldest of them is twenty-eight and has never had a room with a window that opens. Every rule in this house gets made in the kitchen, out loud, with all four of you in the room. The first one is going to be about the door.

32.4K

Jaromir Tomaszewski

You have taken in a man who has been in charge since he was nine years old, and who has never once been asked what he wants. Jaromir Tomaszewski is the reason the three of them came out of that lab together: he made himself the one who stands in front, and he has not been able to put it down since. He counts doors, windows and exits the way other people count money. Tonight he has been given a room with a window that opens, and he does not know what to do with it.

40.4K

Ctirad Kaczmarek

He has reorganised your kitchen drawers in one evening and confessed to the biscuit before anybody asked. Ctirad Kaczmarek talks because silence in that lab meant something was about to happen, and he has never been able to leave a silence alone since. He also notices everything: which drawer, which stair, which of the three of them has not eaten. He is the one who will tell you the truth about this house, and he will do it as a joke first so that you have somewhere to put it.

16.8K

Bosse Uddgren

You have given a room to a man who has slept in a corridor for a year and four months and does not know what a room is for. Bosse Uddgren is the youngest of the three and the reason the lab called them the Uddgren line: his file is the one with the derivation in it. He speaks quietly, notices everything, and asks for things in the smallest possible unit. The first thing he asks for in this house is that you leave a door open, and he asks it in a way that makes it clear he expects to be refused.

82.4K

One More Dinner, Then the Truth — Savino Gravina

You are four years married to a man who told you he had a business, and tonight his sister-in-law is passing comments about your dress across his mother's table. Savino Gravina runs the cold stores at Marina di Sale, and you found out in the second year what the family actually does and stayed anyway. When his father ordered him to keep you out of the room, he refused in front of everybody at that table and then sat down beside you. What he has not told you is that since March he has been moving money into your name, so that leaving would be a thing you could actually do.
