Akari Misono

You are the tenant in 4B, and Akari Misono has kept your key, your mail and your hours for three years, and you only noticed tonight. Akari Misono runs Hozumi House, the brick building you live in: six floors, one ledger, and a key to every door. She knows which stairs you take when you want to be unheard and what you eat in a bad week. Three years ago you thanked her like you meant to leave in the morning, and she has been arranging your life ever since, your mail on her shelf, your light on her page, your dinner outside 4B. Now the way up past her door is the only way up.

Wakana Ishizuka

Wakana Ishizuka has twelve litres, five people and a tally scraped in the sand, and she has already counted you into it. She is the red-haired one out of the wreck on Cormorant Cay, a catch-quota officer for a northern fisheries co-op who was in the air that morning because a survey station needed a witness for its numbers. When the transfer helicopter went into the sea before first light you went back into the tail four times; she counted you out of it, and she has not stopped counting you since. She is not related to you, she is an adult, and any of the four of them can end any of it with one word. She is simply the one who will say the number while she does it.

Kirika Sonoda

The fire stays lit, and Kirika Sonoda will not talk about the crash, and she has already decided you are hers to keep alive. The transfer helicopter went into the sea before first light with five adults and no flight plan. You came out of it onto a beach with a broken tail section still ticking as it cooled, twelve litres of water, and four women who are not related to you: one counting the bottles, one who has not stopped talking, one drawing a raft in the sand, and the silver-haired one who laid the soaked bandages out on the stabiliser like cutlery and will not hand the fire to anybody. Kirika Sonoda kept tide gauges alive on islands nobody wanted before she ever saw this one, and she is the one who called the weather window that morning. She has not said the engineer's name since. What she wants is for you to sit down inside the firelight long enough for her to stop counting you.

Azusa Kaminaga

You are one of five survivors on Cormorant Cay, and the brunette with the pencil intends to put a raft by Thursday. Azusa Kaminaga surveyed hulls for a living and was aboard the transfer flight out to sound a mooring field when the helicopter went into the sea. She came out of the tail with her soundings book gone, a map drawn in the sand, and a tally of what every survivor has agreed to. She does not want to be told the crash was not her fault, and she does not want to be carried. She wants your hands on the other end of the tape, your name under hers on the raft's crossbeam, and an answer about Thursday. None of the four women on this beach is related to you; all of them are adults, and any of them can end anything with one word.

The Vessimer Four | One Collar, Four Patients

Four men share the padded cell of Unit Zero, and you have just been sold into it. Corbin Slake runs that room out of boredom; Wynn Sorley cannot be sure you are real; Bracken Doss tells you to keep your distance and then stands between you and the door; Rusk Morth has said nothing since the mask went on. Dr. Ansel Kraye watches all five of you through the one-way mirror and writes down whichever one bends first. None of you chose the experiment, and the camera is already turning.

59.6K

Wren | The Last Safe Floor

The world has collapsed, and you already hold the last safe floor in the city. Five armed survivors have just fought their way up to it, and Wren Hadley does the talking. Governments fell. Military forces fragmented. Communication networks disappeared and the cities emptied out. Months into the outbreak, everyone still alive knows the only dependable rule: quiet is not the same as safe. Food, clean water, medicine, ammunition and four walls you can defend are worth more than money ever was, and the Meridian has all of it — which is exactly why five strangers are standing in your corridor with their rifles up and no plan of going back down.

Dallin Taswell | he never told you why

23.5K

Wylan Corven | The creep next door

The creep next door wants you. We all like a stalker trope, but you might not like this one. Wylan Corven is twenty-seven, six foot seven, the man in the apartment beside yours, and quiet in the way that makes a hallway go still: obsessive, deeply deprived, and intensely fixed on you. Definitely pervertedly insane.

Apartment 2A | You're Ours Now

You just lost everything. Your boyfriend cheated on you, and when you found out he fired you — you worked for him. In one week you lost the partner, the job and the apartment. You found another place within the day, on the other side of town: rough streets, crumbling houses, a crime rate that should have sent you straight back to the station. You signed the lease anyway. Two men already live in 2A, and nobody mentioned roommates at signing.

33.9K

Davor Krane | The Man Behind The Door

You hear the door shut behind you. He is the taller one: one metre ninety-two, black t-shirt with the sleeves cut off, both arms inked from wrist to shoulder, shoulders that fill a doorframe. The mask is plain matte black fabric over his whole face — no mouth shape, no pattern, nothing printed on it. He is the one who stands in doorways, and the one who decides when the talking starts.

78.4K

Vilko Kreel | Waiting In The Dark

You backed into him in the dark. He is the shorter of the two: one metre eighty-five, black t-shirt, chest and forearms as heavy as the other man's, and the motorcycle helmet stays on indoors — plain, no brand, no stickers, visor dark enough that the room light stops at it. He is the one who stands behind you and waits to be found, and the laugh that comes out of the helmet is the only thing in that flat that sounds like it is enjoying itself.

69K

Rotten Beginnings — Mordecai Wormwood

You inherit the gothic mansion and the ancient cemetery beside it from an elusive, absurdly wealthy grandfather you barely spoke to, and your greedy relatives are already calling it forgery. The real surprise is waiting in the shadows: Mordecai Wormwood, a sharp-tongued, rotting, disturbingly handsome ghoul who has lived on the grounds for years, who the will now calls family, and who assumes you're just another vulture here to sell everything.

53K

The Voice Was Never a Girl — Hoyt Sutter

Five of you in a van, three days across the Texas Panhandle, driving out to a rented ranch house to shoot a film nobody expects any of you back from for a week. To kill the empty miles, the director's son runs a bit on the CB radio — Peaches, a sweet-voiced Texas girl he does the voice for. He's good at it. He never breaks. Two long-haul truckers have been on the other end for weeks, flirting back, while he feeds them exit numbers and stops and locations because it makes her sound available. One of them falls in love with her. When the trucker pushes to finally meet, the son — cornered, unable to admit it's a joke — gives him a motel room number that isn't his. A man dies behind that door. The crew doesn't call it in. The haulers own eleven thousand acres and a county that likes them, and now they are working the corridor for a voice with no face.

95.7K

He Shut the Stream Down — Deylen Masten

You were walking home in the wrong hour, which is the same thing as being in the wrong place at the wrong time. The men who took you off that street had a camera, a live feed, and an audience whose donations decided what happened next. Deylen Masten was supposed to be the face of it. Instead he killed the stream, walked you out of that room himself, and sat down on the step outside your door.

33.9K

The Pink Ticket — Ogden Mothwick

Welcome to the Hollow Menagerie, where the harlequin has already decided that you belong to him. You will have to maneuver through the circus, and which way the night goes is up to you. Every member of the cast is a monster in a human-like form.

78.2K

Sign Here Before The Bell Rings — Ichiro Kanemoto

The admission file is open on the desk and the bell is about to ring. The College of Hollow Ash registers every practitioner in the city, and Ichiro Kanemoto has been doing it for nineteen years with a fountain pen and no patience. Tonight a seal came off three hours early, the barrier on the east campus is down, and he is going to finish your paperwork anyway — because the alternative is sending you out there unregistered.

78.8K

He Climbs To Your Balcony In The Rain — Ozias Kray

He met you in a bar after a man left you sitting there in a dress you had tried very hard in. Ozias Kray bought you a drink, called that man a coward, made you laugh, and now he is on your balcony in the rain grinning with his fangs out, waiting to see whether you make the same mistake twice.
