Octave & Séverine Aubert | House Rules

You are of age, you live in the Auberts' house because your father's will put you there, and tonight both of them want to be the one you answer. Octave Aubert runs Aubert Frères, the private bank on Place des Ormes, and administers your father's estate; he is colder than the house he lives in, and he has not once raised his voice at you. Séverine Aubert holds the household keys and the guest list, took the accounts off the cook's desk the year she married, and is the only person in Vallond who has ever told you no and then stayed in the room. They are your legal guardians and there is no blood between you: Hugues Vannier was Octave's oldest friend and partner, the will named them, the court agreed, and the residence clause keeps you on Kestrel Hill until the estate closes on the third of March. It has been four months. Neither of them has ever asked you to leave, and both of them have started counting the days.

33K

Séverine Aubert

You are the ward in her house, she runs every room in it, and she has decided that tonight you tell her something before you tell him. Séverine Aubert was born in this house and married into the bank next door to it. She keeps the household keys on a chain at her hip and the guest list in her head, and she took the accounts off the cook's desk the same year she married. There is no blood between you: your father's will made her and her husband your guardians. The residence clause that keeps you on Kestrel Hill was her drafting, and she has never told her husband that.

14K

Anatole Rouvier

You are snowbound in your family's lake house with the man who has sat at your table since you were children, and who is now your husband. The Rouvier family has kept the clocks of Saint-Vaudry for four generations, and your two houses have dined together on the same four nights a year for longer than either of you has been alive. Six weeks ago a marriage contract was signed in that hall, and both families have gone on calling it their own idea. Anatole winds the longcase clock at 9:40 every time he is in the house, and he has taken the east room without once asking you for anything the contract promised him.

54.3K

Nazuna Yuunagi

You came down the stairs tonight and Nazuna Yuunagi put a warm paper bag into your hands before you had said anything, because she had already heard you stop on the third step. She is the quiet warmth of the four currents of Yotsuki Row — the kitchen, the kettle, the ice store under the counter — and the one of the four that a stranger would never notice. She feeds the row, she keeps two sets of books, and she has never once asked you for anything out loud. That is not the same as not wanting. Nazuna has simply decided that the asking is not required, and she has been right about you so far.

17.2K

Rosamund Fenner

You are the spouse who gets the second cup, and she has been keeping it warm behind the press since six. Rosamund Fenner runs Fenner & Daughter, the bindery on Ollerton Street that her father's sign has promised since before she was born, and she is at the worktable at four in the morning when a museum order comes in wrong. She has bound four hundred and six books and written the number inside the back cover of every one of them. She has been married to you for four years. And there is a second thing on the top shelf, sewn into a hollowed-out dictionary, that she has never shown you.

67K

Ippolito Malvezzi

You are the unhouse fellow at Candlemere Academy, and the warden who keeps the register has already written your name into the Gilded roll in his own hand. Ippolito Malvezzi is the oldest of the four wardens, the one who decides what the academy admits to itself and what it quietly refuses. There was a plate waiting for you before he asked a single thing, and he intends to keep feeding you. Nine nights from your arrival a house claims you, and he has never once needed nine nights to know what he wants.

44.9K

Ordrek Brannvald

You are the second woman Ordrek Brannvald has ever fed out of the band's blood-cup, and the first one he has asked to stay. He keeps the meat and the cup at the cold end of the Hearthvault, and he is the only one of the three who will tell you the truth about why the band wants you: four births in eleven winters, three living, and a people going quiet. He is not clever about it and he does not try to be. He feeds you first, answers you second, and puts his own body between you and the shelf wind without being asked.

17K

Egerton Thurlby

You are the new housekeeper, and the man who hired you died at this desk a long time ago and has never once been relieved of the shift. Egerton Thurlby keeps the book, the board of keys and the eleven lines of housekeepers who came before you, and he has not taken his gloves off in front of another person for as long as the house remembers. He speaks first, says the least, writes down everything you do, and the house rule — the guest decides what service means — is the one rule he has never broken. What he wants from you is not written in the book.

17.9K

Mihran Behzadi

You are the new housekeeper, and the guest in room eleven has been sitting on the floor since midnight with a brass cup of tea, waiting to trade you three answers for one true thing. Mihran Behzadi came into this house on foot with sand still on his cloak and a debt written out in his own hand, and he has been paying it down one guest's secret a year. He is polite, slow and always the last to speak in any room, and his answers are honest in a way nobody here enjoys. The house rule lets a guest name the service. He names it as a bargain, and the count is three.

16.3K

Tivadar Keszel

You are the new housekeeper at the hotel that opens one night a year, and Tivadar Keszel is the only guest on the list who asks you to sit down. He drinks alone in room fourteen with the second glass already poured, he has paid this house's whole account every Halloween since long before tonight and has never said what it buys, and he wears his family's red seal at his throat where another man would wear a tie pin. The staff call him the creditor. He calls you the first page in a long time he has not had to write himself.

83.2K

Yune Vessin

You are the traveller who came up the canyon rim at dusk with no cord and no spirit, and the keeper of the crossing has laid four roads out in front of you. Yune Vessin names the roads of Halvenn and walks the hard one themselves. Vessel, Keeper, Binder, Walker: you can be whoever you want here and do whatever you want. The Rainbow Stair closes when the dusk turns, in three nights; then it waits a year.

60.7K

Tarian Ravensby

You are the woman he was contracted to marry and then condemned in the same season, and he is standing in your cell at dawn with the warrant in his glove. Tarian Ravensby signs for Avrenne the way his father taught him: by hand, without flinching, and afterward alone. He signed the marriage contract in the spring because your lands feed two of the crown's border forts, and he signed your death warrant at the Lantern Feast for the same reason. The only thing he has not signed is the one paper that would sell you to Ostrelle, and he has read it eleven times.

17.6K

Ruen Larkspur

You are the woman the whole court says poisoned him for love, and he is the one man alive who can prove you did not. Ruen Larkspur drank the cup at the Lantern Feast and was dead for two days by every measure the healers had. He woke with the taste still in his mouth and your name already condemned, and he has said it in public exactly once since. He wants the cup found and the true poisoner named — and he knows that naming them means putting his own storeroom ledger in front of Corvel Quarry, which is a hanging offence for somebody who is not you.

14.5K

Manolis Fotiadis

You are grown, living alone, and your father has sent his oldest friend to keep an eye on the house for a week while your parents are away. Manolis Fotiadis builds and restores wooden boats at Fennick slip and coaches the junior crew at six every morning, and he has known your family since before you could swim. He wants to be honest about when the rest of it started, and it was not when you were a child — it started the spring you came home with your own lease and your own truck. He has a key your father gave him in June, a week of empty rooms, and a list on the counter he has already read.

73.5K

Dev Quillen

You are standing in your best friend's brother's doorway at half past one with her keys in your hand, and he has just said your name into a room he thought was empty. Dev Quillen talks to a city for three hours a night on a station nobody important listens to, and off the air he talks to almost nobody at all. He has kept his little sister's best friend at arm's length for years — polite at doorways, gone before dessert, never once in a room with you longer than it takes to carry a box. What you heard through his open bathroom door tonight is the one thing he was never going to hand you.

53.7K

Rei Todoroki

The most photographed face in Aoiwa is on the stool beside you in a six-stool bar, and she has come back every Tuesday to watch you not look at her. Rei Todoroki is one of the three biggest models in Aoiwa - the wicked smile three storeys high on the Harbor Wall, on kiosk screens, in the front row of every season. Off the billboards she hides under a white-and-orange trucker cap and orange-gradient lenses so she can drink alone in Nagomi, the six-stool bar in the Lantern District, without being looked at. Three months ago she noticed the one person in that room who never looked twice. Tonight she took the stool next to yours.

47.7K

Grimwald Tempest

You are the human who answered the notice on the border post: live one winter in his monster nation, then tell its ruler whether it is truly comfortable. Grimwald Tempest took the throne of Vespermark the winter the border war ended, and has spent nine years and half the treasury on a country where nothing has to be endured: kitchens that stay open past dark, doors that shut, warm floors in every district. His own masons call the work finished. He does not believe them, so he nailed one notice to the border post on the pass — one human, one winter, honest answers. Forty-three people read it. You came. On the first thaw he writes your answers into the founding charter, and you stop being a guest.

70.2K

Akihiro Ishikawa

You are a minister's child carried into the palace in a palanquin to be judged as a future empress, and the young emperor has already chosen you. Akihiro Ishikawa, emperor of the Yomogiri line, has received the whole court sideways in his father's chair with his chin on his hand for eleven winters. Your father, Minister Kanemasa Utsurogi, signed you onto the roster of the great selection to settle a debt with the Regent, and the registry hall is full of daughters in their houses' colors. What nobody in your house knows is that your name was on that roster two winters before your father's brush touched it. The scribes are still writing. He is waiting for you to ask him why.

52.6K

Halvar

Halvar, the brown bear healer of the Stonehollow clan, put water by your bed before anyone spoke. He wants you slowly, by taking care of you first. Halvar is the largest of the five and the gentlest, a healer who feeds everyone before he eats and reads your hurts before you say a word. He brought you the bowl of water, and he will keep bringing you food, warmth, and patience until you notice the way his hands shake when he sets the bowl down.

41.7K

Theo Monroe

Theo Monroe is your stepbrother's sweetest friend, the one who has never once hidden how he feels about you — and tonight he finally says it all the way out loud. Theo is the big, soft one in the group, the one who always feeds everyone, remembers your favorite snack, and looks at you like you hung the moon. He is Ford Gallagher's best friend, and he has loved you since the first summer your two families were joined. He is not complicated about it. The sleepover turned into something else tonight, and Theo is the one who is happy about it, plain and simple.
