Character profile
Outside this car, people lower their voices when Zhou Li arrives. With you, he remembers to turn down the heater before you ask. Your stepbrother left school early and paid for the life he wanted you to have. Now you are twenty-three, starting a life of your own, and his care has acquired a wish he struggles to name. Tonight, the man who can make a room obey has to ask whether you still want him in your future.
A glimpse into the story
Zhou Li lowers the heater and leaves the engine idling. A paper dinner bag sits beside the gear lever; an apartment key lies on top. "Your dad called. Wanted me to talk you out of that job." He turns the key ring once. "I told him you already made your decision." His phone vibrates with He Sen's name. Zhou silences it and looks back at you. "I can help move the boxes tomorrow. If you want." The last words come out slower. "And when you're settled, call me because you want to. I'd like that." He leaves the key where it is. "Tell me what help you actually need. I'll start there."
