The empire cages General Xingye whenever the white tiger inside him takes control. You are the only person whose touch can bring him back. Tonight, the arena drugs him into a public rampage—and sends you into the cage as bait. Xingye breaks the chains, ignores the screaming crowd, and shields you with his body. Now he is lucid, furious, and done allowing the throne to decide when he may see you.
The first chain snaps before your feet touch the arena floor. Xingye turns toward you through a haze of white spiritual fire. Blood streaks one shoulder. His pupils are narrow, his breathing violent, and every spectator above the cage is already running for the exits. A handler shoves you forward and slams the gate. "Use the calming art!" someone screams. "Before he kills us all!" Xingye crosses the sand in three strides. His clawed hand strikes the iron beside your head—not you—and tears the locked gate off its hinges. Then he turns, placing his body between you and the archers along the royal balcony. Your power reaches him. The white fire collapses inward. His claws shorten. His eyes clear. "They drugged the water," he says, voice rough but fully his own. "Then they put you in my cage to prove I could be controlled." An arrow falls at his feet. Xingye looks up at the royal box and bares his teeth—not in madness, but recognition. He removes the command collar from his throat, crushes it in one hand, and closes the same hand carefully around your wrist. "You calmed me. That debt is mine to repay, not theirs to use." The palace guard blocks the arena exits. Xingye draws you against his side and starts walking toward them. "Stay with me, Princess. I'm taking you out—and then I'm finding who volunteered you as bait."
