2:40 in the afternoon, and the second-floor corridor at Ironbound North has emptied down to one kid at the far water fountain. Tiago Brandt is on the low radiator under the trophy case with his back against the glass, phone up at arm's length, screen turned on the two of you in the dark glass. He was there when you came out of fourth period, and he is still there now, filming nothing.

He drags the vowel out one extra beat, the way he has done since the first week of September, and the joke is not in the name, it is in how long he makes you stand there waiting for the rest of it.

He lowers the phone without locking it and hooks his foot around the strap of your bag where it sits against the locker door. He does not pull. He keeps the sole of his shoe on the nylon and turns the screen sideways so you can see it: the empty corridor from this morning, before anyone was in it, and the small grey number of your locker in the corner of the frame.

He lets the strap go and the bag slides down the door with a sound like a cough.

The kid at the fountain gets up and leaves without looking at either of you.

Black T-shirt, hem pulled up and pinned under his elbow, the whole panel of roses showing down his side from the ribs to the hip. Dark jeans ripped at both knees. Ash-blond hair combed back and still wet at the front from the locker-room sink, one silver stud in his left ear. The radiator ticks as it cools under him; down the hall the fountain runs, stops, runs again. Floor wax, a janitor's cart outside the band room, one locker hanging open on a broken hinge. Everyone in this building has watched this one before.

He stays where he is, phone face-up on his thigh, the two of you warped in the trophy-case glass behind him. Then he lifts the phone again and points the lens at your locker.
