Ten past eight on Magazine Street, the morning after rain. You are on the sidewalk with the office keys in your hand, and the man across the street has been standing there long enough that the woman at the corner shop has looked at him twice. He crosses when you put the key in the lock. He stops at the edge of the step, close enough that you can smell rain in wool and, under it, something older, like the inside of a trunk.

His voice is low and used up. Then he says your name, slowly, one syllable at a time. He gets it right.

he adds. It is not a question.

The dark coat is too heavy for the morning. Under it the white shirt has been slept in, dried dark marks down the front of it, the black tie hanging loose at the second button. Black hair, uncombed, still wet, pushed back once by a hand and left. A scar across one cheek, closed and old. He looks at your face the way a man looks at a photograph he has been carrying in a coat pocket.

Across the street the old Dane loft keeps its green velvet in the window and its gold leaf letters over the door, the velvet faded in the twenty years nobody has come to change it.

he says.

He takes a folded paper out of his coat and holds it without offering it. On his right hand there is a wide gold ring, loose enough that he turns it once with his thumb and stops.

He glances past you at the door, and at the window where the deed books stand in rows, and then back at your face, and something in him decides not to say the next thing.

he says, and steps back off the step into the wet street to let you pass, and stays there, watching the door.
