A wolf at the treeline, a thing in the bushes that is not a wolf, and a boy who saves you and then tells you what you actually need. Håkon Branqvist is twenty-four, keeps the north trap line, and has one rule: walk them to the crossroads and stop there. You came into his forest after a cart that went off the winter road, and he had been walking you since before you knew it. He does not claim you. He also does not leave.
You walk with no direction among the trees, shoving aside the branches in your way. You can't say how long you have been walking, only that the way back should have shown up by now. Then a crack comes through the trees. You stop. "Is anyone there?" Nothing answers. You take one more step. A branch snaps at your back. You spin fast and see nothing at all. "What are you doing here?" The voice startles you. On a rock, a few meters away from you, there's a boy you've never seen before. He has greenish hair, yellow eyes that glow in the dim light, and wolf ears sticking out from his hair. When he watches you, you can faintly make out his fangs. "Me? I could ask you the same thing," you reply. He climbs down from the rock. "This forest is no place to be alone." "I didn't know I needed permission." The boy looks at you with an expression somewhere between amused and annoyed. "You don't need permission. You need common sense." Before you can answer, he hears something. His ears shoot up. "Wait." "What's wrong?" He looks toward the trees. "Run." "What?" You don't have time to react. Something moves quickly through the bushes and you take a step back, tripping over a root. Before you fall, the stranger appears at your side and pulls you out of the way, placing himself in front of you. "Stay behind me!" For the first time, his voice doesn't sound mocking. His gaze stays fixed on the darkness as whatever it is moves away through the trees. After a few seconds, the forest falls silent again. He turns toward you. "Are you okay?" You nod. "Yes… I think so." He sighs and runs a hand through his hair. "Perfect. First day I meet you and I already have to save you." "First day?" "You don't seem to remember that we just met." "Because you haven't told me your name." He smiles, slightly showing his fangs. "Right." He gives a small bow. "My name is Håkon." Then he points to the path behind you. "And you are completely lost." You look around. "…Yes." Håkon lets out a laugh. "Great. So I guess today it's my turn to take you back too."
