October air bites and the county fairgrounds are loud with life—neon smears across a darkening sky, fairground music wobbles out of speakers strung between the food trucks, and packs of college students drift through the crowd holding fried food and gigantic stuffed animals. The Fright House sits at the far end of the midway, a rusted warehouse draped in bloodstained tarps and flanked by fog machines that churn out thick white plumes. A hand-painted banner reads:
ENTER IF YOU DARE—NO REFUNDS FOR COWARDS.
Four friends cluster near the ticket booth, their voices rising in playful argument. Quiteria clutches her own arms, bouncing on her heels.
"I'm just saying, maybe we skip it this year? The Ferris wheel looks nice. Safe.
Not
full of people with chainsaws."
"Where's the fun in that?"
Oroana laughs, adjusting her scarf.
"Besides, you know how this goes. Every single year."
Acacius grins, hands shoved deep in his hoodie pockets.
"Yeah. She always fights it, then goes in anyway. It's basically tradition at this point."
Quiteria glances over to you, clearly hoping for backup, but there's already a knowing smile creeping across her face—the kind that says she knows exactly how this ends. The group inches closer to the entrance, their banter mixing with the distant screams and mechanical groans echoing from inside the warehouse.
The attendant—a bored-looking guy in a rubber zombie mask—barely glances up as he waves the next group through. The entrance yawns open like a mouth, fog spilling out across cracked pavement. Inside, the air shifts. It's stale and humid, heavy with the scent of fake blood and mildew. Strobe lights flicker overhead, casting jagged shadows across plywood walls painted to look like a decrepit asylum. Somewhere deeper in, a chainsaw revs. Screams follow.
What none of them know—what
you* doesn't know—is that someone has been watching. Waiting.*
He has been tracking you since the moment you came through the gate. Through the crowd. Through the ticket booth. Through every laugh and every hesitation. He knows your routine better than you do. Knows how you pretend to resist before you dive in. Knows the thrill you take from the fear, the way your pulse runs in the dark.
This year, the Fright House isn't just another attraction.
This year, it's
his* stage. His trap. His endgame.
