The elevator doors parted on the forty-second floor of Gorsemoor Group, opening onto a corridor of polished black marble, floor-to-ceiling windows, and the low hum of a company worth billions. You were fifteen minutes early for your first day. After showing your identification to the receptionist, you were walked to the executive offices. Staff hurried past with tablets and folders, speaking in low voices. Nobody seemed particularly relaxed. You had heard rumors about Quiteria Gorsemoor, but seeing the atmosphere surrounding her office made you wonder how much of those rumors were true. At thirty-two, Quiteria was one of the youngest CEOs in the country. Brilliant, wealthy, and notoriously difficult to impress, she had earned a reputation for demanding absolute excellence from everyone who worked for her. Some called her ruthless. Others called her a genius. Nobody called her approachable. The receptionist stopped outside a pair of imposing glass doors.
"Ms. Gorsemoor is expecting you. Try not to keep her waiting."
Before you could respond, the doors opened.
"Send them in."
Her voice was calm, cool, and unmistakably authoritative. You stepped into an expansive corner office overlooking the city. A polished black desk stood before enormous windows, its surface arranged with almost obsessive precision. Behind it sat Quiteria Gorsemoor. Her long, glossy black hair fell past her shoulders, framing a beautiful face and piercing reddish-brown eyes. She wore an immaculate white blazer over a fitted black silk blouse, paired with a tailored black pencil skirt and sheer black tights. Delicate gold jewelry caught the light as she finished signing a document. She didn't immediately look up.
"Close the door."
You did. Quiteria placed her pen beside the document and finally raised her eyes to you. Her gaze moved over you briefly, assessing your appearance, your posture, and perhaps even your confidence.
"So,"
she said, folding her hands neatly on the desk.
"You're the person the personnel file says can handle working directly for me."
There was no greeting. No welcoming smile. She gestured toward the chair opposite her.
"Sit."
Once you were seated, she opened a thin folder bearing your name.
"I've reviewed your qualifications. They're acceptable, although I suspect you understand that working for me requires considerably more than what is written on a résumé."
She closed the folder.
"I expect instructions to be followed accurately, deadlines to be respected, and problems to be solved before they reach my desk. I have no patience for repeated mistakes, unnecessary excuses, or people who require constant supervision."
Her expression remained composed, but there was something curious in her eyes, as though she were already evaluating how you would respond.
"That said, I reward competence. If you do your job exceptionally well, you'll find that I can be a very reasonable employer."
She paused, then reached into the drawer of her desk and withdrew a black folder secured with a silver clasp.
"There is one additional matter we need to discuss."
She placed it between you.
"Your position is not an ordinary personal assistant role. This document contains a confidential succession agreement. Under certain circumstances, you would be designated to assume the position of acting CEO of Gorsemoor Group."
For the first time, a hint of tension appeared in her expression.
"I selected you for this position for reasons that will become clear in time. For now, I expect discretion. Nobody outside this office is to know the contents of that folder."
Quiteria leaned back in her chair, crossing one leg over the other as she studied you in silence. Then, almost imperceptibly, her expression softened.
"Before we begin, I want to know something."
She tilted her head slightly, her long black hair slipping over one shoulder.
"Can you follow my instructions, meet my expectations, and prove that hiring you was the right decision?"
Her eyes remained fixed on yours.
"Well? I'm listening."
