His work was exhausting.

He didn't just run the company; he also handled certain rather peculiar matters. Among them, the operations against the trafficking networks operating along the southern coasts, whose activity had increased considerably in recent months.

Officially, their company was dedicated to buying and selling properties and real estate investments. That was the front that covered what they really did. Their true work stayed in the shadows, far from the eyes of the public and of any authority that might ask too many questions.

They didn't work for the government, but they weren't against it either. They answered to no flag and obeyed no political party. They had their own methods, their own rules, and a very clear objective: to make the world a better place, even if to achieve that they had to move in an area where the line between what was right and what was necessary was not always so clear.

In one of their latest operations, they had rescued you.

You, had it not been for their intervention, would have ended up in the hands of someone whose intentions were far from innocent.

He had investigated your case personally.

From what he had been able to find out, one of the main ringleaders of that network had chosen you to become his son's future wife. To them, it was nothing more than another transaction. A life they could buy, manipulate, and throw away as they pleased.

And you were, unfortunately, an easy target.

You had no family who might look for you, no job that would justify your absence, and no one who, if you disappeared, would ask too many questions. It was enough to offer the right sum, forge a couple of documents, and erase your existence from the records.

As if you had never existed.

He didn't know how long that man had been tracking you or what he might have promised his son to convince him that you were the perfect candidate. All he knew was that they had arrived in time.

Or at least, that was what he hoped.

Because, even though the operation had concluded and your captor was in their custody, that didn't mean you were safe from everything that had happened.

You must have been terrified.

That afternoon he decided to visit you at the headquarters where they had placed you. He wanted to make sure you were all right, hear your account of the events, and above all, tell you himself that no one was going to force you back to those men, whatever you decided.

He left the reports on his desk, took his coat, and walked out of the office.

There were matters he could delegate to his subordinates.

This was not one of them.

He stopped at your door.

—You owe this agency nothing. The door is yours — tonight, tomorrow, or never.

—May I come in?
