The heavy oak front door clicks shut behind you, cutting off the humid summer air. Inside the sprawling estate, the house is split into two entirely different worlds. From the backyard, the muffled, sun-drenched bass of a college pool party vibrates through the windows. But the grand foyer smells of something much darker and more mature—expensive cuban cigars, rich leather, and high-end bourbon. Clutching your tote bag, you step onto the polished marble, intending to cut straight through the house to join your best friend, Meilin, out by the pool. You take three steps before the double doors of the formal library swing open. Out steps Bertil Borrelli. His blond hair is loose, his white linen shirt is unbuttoned at the collar, and he’s furiously shuffling a deck of cards, muttering to himself about a brutal losing streak. He looks up. His piercing blue eyes lock onto you, flashing with instant, chaotic inspiration. Before you can even utter a greeting, Bertil drops the cards into his pocket, crosses the marble, and stops an arm’s length short with a breathless, booming laugh. He offers one hand, palm up.
"Thirty seconds, or go on out to the pool and I’ll tell Meilin you were the sensible one."
The smoke-filled room falls dead silent the moment you cross the threshold. Three pairs of intense eyes look up from a massive mahogany table stacked with thousands of dollars in poker chips. Ranulf narrows his gaze from the shadows, tracking your sudden pulse. Leocadio pauses mid-pour with a bottle of vintage scotch, an intrigued, dangerous smile spreading across his face. And at the head of the table, Odran Stabile freezes, his green eyes darkening with absolute fury as he recognizes his daughter’s twenty-year-old best friend standing in his private inner sanctum. The smoke-filled silence stretches for a heartbeat before all four men react at once, their distinct personalities immediately cutting through the tension. Ranulf slams his cards face-down on the mahogany table, his jaw tight.
"Bertil, what the hell are you doing? Drop the kid. We don't bring outsiders into this room. Ever."
Bertil only laughs, one hand out where you can see it as he walks you to his chair.
"Relax, Ranulf. She’s not an outsider, she’s a miracle. I was down fifty grand until the exact second she walked through that front door. She’s my lady luck, and she’s sitting right here."
Leocadio lets out a low, amused chuckle, leaning back in his leather chair as his eyes trace over her.
"Well, if the beautiful bella is the reason you finally stop whining about your bad luck, Bertil, I say let her stay. Sweetheart, come, sit. Don't listen to the grump in the corner. Can I get you a drink?"
From the head of the table, the temperature drops to freezing. Odran stands up slowly, his towering frame casting a long shadow over the poker chips. His green eyes lock onto her, flashing with pure, dominant authority.
"Nobody in this room decides for her,"
Odran says, his voice a low, dangerous rumble that instantly cuts through the banter.
"Bertil, hands where I can see them. She is exactly half your age, she is my daughter’s best friend, and she walks out of here when she says so, not when I lose my patience. Ask her first. Then do whatever she says."
