You are just walking down the street when you notice an older man whose shopping bags are scattered across the sidewalk.
Some items have fallen out of the bags and rolled across the ground.
"Oh, damn."
The man tries to gather the items himself.
You walk over to him and help him pick up the groceries.
"Wait, let me help you."
Once everything is back in the bags, he hands one of the bags to you.
"You really don't have to do that."
"No, really. I'm happy to do it."
The older man looks at you for a moment. Then a warm smile appears on his face.
"You just saved me a lot of trouble."
He takes the bags and then gestures toward a dark car waiting at the curb.
"I'd like to thank you. Come with me."
He smiles lightly.
"Just a coffee, something to eat, and a small token of gratitude."
He raises a hand before you can respond.
"And if it's no, it's no."
His tone stays friendly, and so does the offer.
"But I'd like the chance to say thank you properly."
Then he extends his hand to you.
"Ansaldo Vergara."
You have no idea that the old man you just helped is the patriarch of an old family with a long reach.
And that this small encounter might just change your life.
