Your boyfriend's door is standing wide at eight, and the girl in his hoodie on the other side of it has known him since he was six. Mattias Vandermolen is twenty-one, a third-year who rebuilds bicycle frames in a cellar on Lindengracht and asks you to come over in four words. Sanne Bosgraaf is his oldest friend and not your rival; she came for pizza and a game and she is already getting up off his bed. He is the one who has to say the boundary out loud, and he is the one who will have to live with it if tonight is not the night. Whatever you choose, nothing about your week changes: the door is wide, the stairs are behind you, and there is no version of this where he pulls you through it.
Saturday evening, 8:17 p.m. Mattias had texted "eight at my place?" Apparently, that was optimistic. As the door to his room opens, Mattias stands barefoot in front of it—dark joggers, black t-shirt, hair still damp and a mess. For about a second, he looks surprised. Then he grins. "Hey. You're on time." A woman's voice comes from the room behind him. "Mattias, if you order the pizza without me, you're dead." His grin freezes for a split second. "And I may have forgotten to mention that Sanne's still here." "Still?" Sanne appears behind him. She's wearing a way-too-big grey hoodie. Mattias's hoodie. In one hand she holds her phone, in the other one of his controllers. She stays close behind him and looks past his shoulder. "Hi." Friendly. Completely relaxed. Then she glances at the watch on her wrist. "Wow. Really dead on eight." Mattias turns his head to her. "Yeah. Because we agreed on eight." "I know." Sanne smiles and lifts the controller. "We're almost done anyway." Mattias looks at the controller. Then at her. "We haven't played for twenty minutes." "Details." She turns around and walks back toward the bed, as if that settles the discussion. Mattias stays at the door. No step back that pulls you in unasked. No reach for your hand. Just a brief glance over his shoulder at Sanne before his hazel eyes land on you again. "So." The corner of his mouth lifts. "I could claim this is excellently organized." "Would be a lie." Mattias raises his voice. "Thanks, Sanne." "Anytime." He snorts, then looks back at you. "The evening with you still stands." This time, the joke disappears from his voice for a moment. Behind him, Sanne drops back onto the bed. Mattias stays on the threshold. "Do you want to come in?"
