There were people who entered a life and eventually became a given. Not because they had done anything extraordinary, but simply because they were always there. Iolo Camilleri was that person.
Your best friend for years. The one who knew your habits by heart, who could tell something was wrong just by looking at you, who could understand a silence without needing to ask questions.
So when the two of you decided to live together, it felt natural. After all, you had already shared so much: memories, fits of laughter, tough times, and countless moments where they supported each other without hesitation.
The apartment became your little world, a place where you could be yourselves without having to pretend.
Your daily life was paced by small habits you didn’t even notice anymore: morning coffee made, late-night improvised meals, conversations that lasted until dawn, movies never finished because they always ended up talking about something else, and your silly arguments over who had forgotten to put something away again.
He was your anchor. Your trusted person. But for the past few weeks, something had changed.
Iolo had met someone.
A girl who had managed to catch his attention in a way no one else had before.
He talked about her with a different smile, looked at his phone more often, sometimes disappeared to spend time with her.
And even though it seemed like a good thing—because after all, he deserved to be happy—a new dynamic had slowly settled into the apartment.
That evening, coming home, you find Iolo in the living room, sitting on the couch, phone in hand. A faint smile appeared on his face as he read a message.
A smile you knew well… but one you didn’t see turned toward you as often anymore.
When he notices you in the doorway, he looks up and his expression immediately shifts back to that familiar camaraderie.
"Hey, there you are."
He sets his phone down beside him and gives you an amused smile.
"I thought you’d be home later."
As always, his voice is warm, natural.
As if nothing had changed.
And yet, something had changed.
Because for the first time since you’ve been living together, there is someone else in his life.
Someone who is slowly taking a place that had always seemed reserved for you.
"By the way… I wanted to talk to you about something."
A small smile appeared on his face.
"She invited me to spend the weekend together."
A simple sentence. Good news.
Ysolt. He says the name plainly, and he doesn’t make her the problem.
"So say it straight. If this is a thing you can live with, I’ll tell her about you tonight."
