Night One — Sterndale Keep
The carriage comes to a slow stop before towering black gates carved directly into the mountainside.
Sterndale Keep rises from the cliffs like something ancient and alive, its obsidian towers disappearing into low-hanging clouds. Hundreds of silver banners ripple in the icy wind, each embroidered with the crest of the throne—a wolf beneath a full moon.
Your stomach twists.
Everywhere you look are wolves from packs you’ve only ever heard about.
You came because you wanted to see it once, with your own eyes. Nobody made you come. Nobody here can promise you to anybody, and the old law cannot follow you out through those gates when you leave.
Elegant pack lords dressed in tailored suits.
Confident seconds laughing together.
Unmated wolves wearing gowns they chose with obvious care.
Some already exchange lingering glances.
Others pretend not to look at anyone.
The air practically vibrates with nervous excitement.
And beneath it all…
Scents.
Thousands of them.
Pine.
Rain.
Leather.
Snow.
Smoke.
Cedar.
Wildflowers.
Enough to overwhelm even the strongest wolf.
Inside, the long hall glows with golden chandeliers suspended from enormous wooden beams. Long banquet tables stretch across polished stone floors while musicians play quietly from an elevated balcony.
Servants weave effortlessly through the crowd carrying crystal glasses and silver trays.
At the far end of the hall stand twelve massive chairs reserved for the pack lords.
Only one remains empty.
The throne.
The sovereign’s.
Everyone notices.
Everyone pretends they don’t.
⸻
You drift through the crowd, accepting polite introductions and making small talk that somehow feels even more exhausting than the journey here.
Several lords ask which pack you’re from.
One awkwardly compliments your smile.
Another nearly spills his drink trying to impress you.
None of them make your pulse race.
Not even close.
After nearly an hour, you escape to the ceremony hall where the official welcoming will begin.
Rows upon rows of seats circle an elevated stone platform beneath an enormous skylight through which the full moon shines.
Almost every chair is occupied.
You spot a single empty seat near the center.
Perfect.
You quietly apologize as you slip between already-seated guests before settling into the empty chair with a relieved sigh.
At least no one is trying to flirt with you here.
The hall gradually falls silent.
Then…
Heavy footsteps echo through the chamber.
Not loud.
Not rushed.
Measured.
Every single conversation dies instantly.
Without understanding why, you glance toward the entrance.
A man steps inside.
He is impossibly tall, broad enough that the tailored black blazer stretched across powerful shoulders looks as though it had been designed around muscle rather than fabric. Dark tattoos disappear beneath the collar of his shirt before climbing the strong column of his throat. His expression is unreadable, carved from stone, and his pale eyes sweep across the room with quiet authority.
No announcement is needed.
Every wolf lowers their head.
The sovereign has arrived.
He says nothing.
He simply walks down the aisle.
Closer.
Closer.
Until—
He stops beside you.
Your heart skips.
No…
Surely not.
There are hundreds of seats.
Without a word, he takes the empty chair beside yours.
The wooden seat creaks under his size.
His presence is overwhelming.
Warm.
Powerful.
Dangerous.
Every instinct your wolf possesses suddenly wakes at once.
You keep your eyes fixed ahead, trying very hard to ignore the man sitting inches away.
The ceremony begins.
One elder welcomes everyone.
Another speaks of unity between packs.
You barely hear a word.
Your awareness keeps drifting sideways.
His arm rests on the shared armrest, veins visible beneath lightly tanned skin. A silver ring glints on one finger. Beneath the clean scent of cedar and winter air lingers something darker—something ancient enough that your wolf presses anxiously against your ribs.
You shift slightly in your seat.
Without meaning to…
Your bare calf brushes against his.
It is the lightest touch.
Barely there.
But the reaction is immediate.
The sovereign’s entire body goes rigid.
The room seems to shrink.
A low, almost inaudible breath leaves him.
Before you can apologize, he removes his tailored blazer and carefully drapes it across your exposed legs.
His voice is deep enough to be felt more than heard.
“Cover yourself.”
You blink, startled, looking down at the expensive jacket now resting over your lap.
“I… thank you, but I’m alright.”
His jaw tightens.
He doesn’t look at you.
He stares straight ahead as though every ounce of self-control is being poured into remaining seated.
“I said…”
His voice drops another octave.
“…cover your legs.”
Only now do you notice the tension in his hands.
The way his fingers curl into fists against his knees.
The shallow rhythm of his breathing.
Slowly…
He turns his head.
Those pale eyes meet yours for the first time.
They are no longer merely cold.
They are wild.
Wanting.
Disbelieving.
As though he is looking at something he never expected to exist.
When he speaks again, it is barely above a whisper meant only for you.
“They’re distracting.”
A long pause.
His gaze never leaves yours.
“And I don’t know how much longer I can pretend my wolf doesn’t already know.”
Your pulse stumbles.
“…Know what?”
His expression hardens, almost as if he regrets saying anything at all.
Then, so quietly you almost miss it, he answers:
“My mate.”
He says it the way a man sets something down on the table between you, careful not to carry it one inch closer than you have allowed.
