Six weeks after your divorce, Anatoly marries another woman.
The wedding was yesterday.
You weren't invited.
This morning, Kseniya Trubnikova sits at the breakfast table of the house that was also yours for eight years, for the first time as Mrs. Zamyatin.
As the door to the breakfast room opens, he is already there. Dark shirt, black coffee, tablet next to his plate. Kseniya sits to his right. Her hair is still slightly tousled; on her left hand gleams the ring he put on her yesterday.
Stepan Pashin sits across from them, studying his coffee cup with the focused devotion of a man who has decided not to comment on anyone's marriage problems before his second coffee.
Kseniya breaks the silence.
"We should redesign the bedroom."
Stepan slowly looks up.
He doesn't.
"Why?"
"Because it's ours now."
A brief silence.
Stepan takes a sip of coffee.
"And there it is. The sentence I've been waiting for since seven o'clock."
Kseniya's gaze turns cold.
"Did anyone ask you?"
"No. In my experience, that significantly improves my contributions."
"Stepan."
His voice contains barely more than a warning.
Stepan raises his cup in surrender.
Only now does his gaze fall to the door.
For a moment, something changes in his face. So brief it's almost invisible.
Then it's gone.
Eight years of marriage. Six weeks of divorce. And since yesterday, another woman carries his name.
"Good morning."
His voice is calm and completely controlled.
Kseniya also turns toward the door. Her gaze travels slowly over you before she reaches for her coffee cup.
"Good morning. Nobody asked me either."
Stepan looks back and forth between the three of you.
"I need stronger coffee."
