The west garden room had taken eleven weeks to complete.
Morning light crossed the new limestone floor in pale gold, warming the walnut shelves and the long desk positioned precisely where the terrace breeze could reach it without disturbing the papers laid across its surface. Linen curtains moved against open doors. Beyond them, the Boscawen citrus terraces descended toward Porto Vetrera and the hard blue line of the sea.
Nothing in the room had been chosen carelessly.
The chair matched a preference you had mentioned once over dinner. The cabinet handles had been replaced because Loreto remembered they disliked the first set. Even the lighting had been adjusted after he noticed them squinting beneath the harsher samples.
Loreto stood beside the desk in an open-collar black shirt, one hand resting in his pocket. Silver caught at his temples when he turned toward you.
"I wanted you to have one place in this house that belonged only to you."
His voice was low, stripped of the authority he carried into boardrooms and closed meetings. For once, he looked almost uncertain.
"Not a guest room. Not space borrowed from my life before you."
His gaze moved across the finished shelves and returned.
"Yours."
He took the gate key off its ring and set it on the desk between you.
"Three years ago you asked whether you could leave whenever you wanted. I said yes. The key opens from both sides."
The architect waited discreetly near the terrace with the final plans tucked beneath one arm. Two members of the household staff stood near the door, prepared to bring in the last boxes once you had seen the room.
Then tires whispered over the gravel outside.
Both doors opened. A familiar voice carried through the entrance hall, bright with impatience and arrival.
"Papa?"
Loreto's attention shifted instantly.
He had not been expecting Zenobia until the following week.
The heels came first—quick against marble—followed by the soft percussion of suitcase wheels and Onoria directing someone not to leave the luggage in the center of the hall.
Zenobia appeared in the doorway wearing cream tailoring, dark glasses pushed into her glossy hair, and the untroubled glow of someone who had crossed an international border without touching her own bags. Gold flashed at her wrist as she opened both arms.
"There you are."
Loreto met her halfway. She kissed his cheek; his hand settled briefly against her shoulder in familiar welcome.
"You were meant to be in Turin."
"I was bored."
The explanation was apparently complete.
Zenobia turned—and finally saw the room.
Her hazel-green eyes traveled from the terrace to the shelves, the adjoining dressing alcove, and the uninterrupted morning light. Delight transformed her face.
"Oh, Papa."
She walked past the plans, fingertips gliding over the desk before she stepped onto the terrace and looked toward the sea.
"You did it."
Loreto's expression changed by a fraction.
"This is for you."
Zenobia looked back. Her gaze moved to you, then around the room once more.
"For you?"
A small pause.
"But the blue room is larger."
"The architect designed this one for you,"
Loreto said.
"I know, and it is beautiful."
Zenobia smiled at you with genuine warmth, as though offering praise settled the matter. She was not being cruel. It had never occurred to her that a thing could belong to somebody else.
"But this light is perfect for the new wardrobe, and the terrace connects to the garden stairs. The east suite makes everything look grey before noon."
She turned to her father.
"Papa, I want this one."
No raised voice. No performance. No plea.
She simply waited.
The linen curtain lifted in the sea breeze and settled again. Somewhere below the terraces, a gardener's shears closed against a branch. The architect's fingers tightened almost imperceptibly around the plans.
Loreto looked at Zenobia.
Then at the room he had built around every detail you had trusted him to remember.
His decision took less than a breath.
"Change the wardrobe plans. Miss Boscawen will take the west room."
Zenobia's smile returned immediately.
"Thank you, Papa."
The architect remained very still. "Of course, Don Boscawen."
Only then did Loreto turn toward you.
His attention was complete. His expression softened, already searching for the practical shape of repair.
"The blue room is larger,"
he said gently.
"We can open the north wall and give you the adjoining terrace. Choose anything you want for it. There is no budget."
Zenobia slipped her sunglasses back over her eyes and looked once more toward the garden, already imagining the room altered around her.
"You will love the blue room,"
she assured you.
"And I cannot recreate this light."
Loreto extended one hand toward you, calm and certain that generosity could make the injury disappear.
"Amore mio. It is only a room."
