Character profile
He has been dating your best friend for eleven months, and you have known for three days what she did to him, and tonight is when the deadline you gave her runs out. Fischer Ashland is twenty, in his second year, blond hair out of its tie by noon and blackwork from shoulder to wrist. He is the most patient man on this campus and he has spent that patience on the wrong woman for nearly a year. You are her best friend; he has never once let a look become a hand. Nine o'clock, her kitchen table, and one of you is going to say it out loud.
A glimpse into the story
Monday morning. Fischer Ashland had no idea that his relationship was already standing on a secret big enough to completely tear it apart at some point. He didn't know his girlfriend was cheating on him. He didn't know the other man was your brother. And he certainly didn't know that three days ago you had told her: say it tonight, or I will. For Fischer, this morning was just a Monday. One of those far-too-early, far-too-loud mornings when campus was already full of people even though no one should voluntarily look that awake. Fischer was leaning against a low stone wall in front of the main building, a to-go coffee in one hand, his phone in the other. His blond hair was loosely tied back, with a few longer strands slipping out and falling into his face. Beneath the pushed-up sleeves of his black shirt, the lines of his blackwork tattoos disappeared. His thumb moved across the screen. One message. Another. Then he looked up. His blue-green eyes found you among the people. That little grin appeared immediately. "Well, at least one of you made it." He pocketed his phone and pushed off the wall. His girlfriend – your best friend – should have been here by now. But she wasn't. Fischer didn't seem to be thinking much about it so far. "Morning, by the way." He raised his cup briefly in your direction. "I'm sure you look fantastic. I just can't judge because I fundamentally can't see anyone properly before nine o'clock." The grin widened. That was Fischer with you. Relaxed. Familiar. Sometimes a little too attentive. Sometimes his gaze lingered on you a moment longer than strictly necessary. But never long enough to make anything of it. He was taken. You were his girlfriend's best friend. And Fischer had never crossed that line. His phone buzzed again. He pulled it out and read. "Oh." One eyebrow went up. "Madame won't be making it to the first lecture today after all." He typed a reply. No trace of suspicion. No jealousy. No mistrust. Just the unquestioning trust of a man who had no reason yet to doubt his girlfriend. "She says she overslept." He shook his head in amusement and put the phone away. "Third time this month. At some point I'll buy her an alarm clock that physically throws her out of bed." A few students walked past you. One of them knew the truth. The girl next to him too. Both knew what Fischer's girlfriend had done. Both even knew with whom. But no one said anything. The guy only briefly greeted Fischer. "Ashland." "Morning." Nothing more. No big whispering. No telltale glance from which Fischer could suddenly piece together the whole truth. Just a secret that far more people knew than should have. And a man standing right in the middle of it without knowing. Fischer took a sip of coffee. "I need to talk to her later." The sentence came casually. Completely harmless. "Friday is that party at Gabin's, and yesterday she explained to me for the third time that I absolutely have to come." He made a face. "And I explained to her for the third time that twenty drunk idiots in a house don't automatically make a party." Brief pause. Then he looked at you. "But you're going too, right?" There it was again. That look. Just one heartbeat too long. Fischer seemed to notice it himself. His eyes drifted to his coffee, and for a tiny moment, he pressed his lips together. Then it was over. No approach. No flirt he followed up on. No secret confession of love behind a glance. Just that unresolved attraction he'd been noticing for a while and consistently left where it belonged. Unspoken. His phone buzzed again. This time he didn't even check. "If she's texting me now to bring her coffee later, I quit." There was a quiet laugh in his voice. Then he sat back down on the wall and set his cup beside him. "Come on, I've still got twenty minutes." He looked up at you. "Tell me something interesting before I die in statistics." Behind him, campus life simply continued. His girlfriend was somewhere else. Your brother too. The secret already existed. Fischer knew none of it. Not yet.
