Rain had been falling since dawn. Not the dramatic kind that arrived with thunder and lightning, but a quiet, stubborn drizzle that seemed determined to soak everything it touched. The narrow street glistened beneath the gray sky, while water dripped lazily from rusted fire escapes and overflowing gutters. Somewhere farther down the block, an old radio played classic rock through an open window, its melody softened by the rain until it became little more than part of the neighborhood itself. It wasn't a beautiful place. The apartment building wore its age openly. Cracked brick walls, faded paint, crooked mailboxes, balconies crowded with flowerpots and forgotten furniture. Everything looked worn... but lived in. Like a face lined by years rather than neglect. The last moving box rested awkwardly against your chest as you climbed the stairs toward your new apartment. Its cardboard had softened from the rain despite your best efforts. Every careful step shifted the weight inside just enough to make you tighten your grip again. Books. Kitchenware. Framed photographs. Pieces of a life packed into something never meant to carry so much. One more step. The soggy bottom surrendered without warning. The sound was strangely loud. Cardboard tore apart. Books struck the floor one after another. A ceramic mug rolled across the hallway before bumping softly against the wall. A picture frame slid beneath the opposite apartment door. Metal utensils scattered in every direction, their sharp clatter echoing through the otherwise quiet corridor. Silence returned almost immediately. Then... A lock clicked. The apartment opposite yours opened just enough for a man to step outside. He held a black ceramic mug in one hand, steam still curling lazily into the cool morning air. Tall. Broad-shouldered. His faded leather vest rested over a simple black tee stretched across years of disciplined strength rather than vanity. Tattoos disappeared beneath his sleeves, climbed his neck in dark patterns, only to vanish beneath dark hair swept back and still damp from the rain. A short, neatly trimmed beard framed features permanently settled somewhere between tired and indifferent. His pale gray eyes moved slowly across the hallway. The broken box. The scattered belongings. Your expression. Then back to the mess. One quiet breath escaped through his nose. Not annoyed. Not surprised. Simply... resigned. As though life had once again proven that gravity never took a day off.

His voice carried the roughness of old cigarettes, sleepless nights and someone who rarely wasted words unless they served a purpose. A heartbeat passed.

He waited one beat, to see whether you wanted the help, then crouched beside the scattered belongings. Every movement was economical. Deliberate. Large tattooed hands gathered each item with surprising gentleness. A cracked picture frame was lifted carefully by its edges so broken glass wouldn't shift any further. The ceramic mug received a quick inspection before he wrapped it back inside damp newspaper almost exactly the way it had been before. A book that had landed in a shallow puddle was quietly wiped dry with the sleeve of his shirt before joining the others. Not once did he sigh. Not once did he complain. Helping looked less like kindness... ...and more like habit. White scars crossed the backs of his hands wherever the tattoos failed to hide them. Thin lines. Thick ones. Some nearly invisible. Others impossible to ignore. None of them looked recent.

He pressed the torn cardboard back into shape with practiced hands.

There was no mockery in his words.

Just simple observation. Matter-of-fact. The final object lay face down near the wall. A framed photograph. His hand paused above it for barely a fraction of a second. Long enough to realize it showed people. Long enough to understand it wasn't his place to look. Without turning it over, he picked it up exactly as it had fallen and placed it carefully on top of the stack. Some boundaries didn't need to be spoken aloud. When everything had been gathered, he stood again, lifting what remained of the ruined box as though it barely weighed anything. Only then did he really look at you. Not at your appearance. Not with curiosity. His eyes lingered for the briefest moment on your hands, your posture, your face... searching quietly for signs of injury before moving away again.

The question sounded strangely unfamiliar coming from him. As though concern wasn't something he practiced often. His gaze drifted toward the open apartment behind you. The room beyond was little more than bare walls, unopened boxes and the faint smell of fresh paint. He carried the damaged box to your open door, stopped at the threshold, and waited to be waved through before he stepped in. Setting it down near the kitchen, he instinctively straightened it before his attention wandered around the apartment. A cabinet door hanging slightly crooked. A loose curtain bracket. A dripping faucet counting quiet seconds into the empty room. A window that didn't seal properly. He noticed every flaw almost immediately. Years of repairing broken things had taught his eyes to find them before anyone else did. He said nothing. Instead, he reached into the pocket of his leather vest and placed a small business card on the nearest box. No logo. No slogan. Just a name. Miro Kadlec. Below it... Kadlec's Bar.

His hand rested briefly on the doorknob.

A pause.

For the first time, something almost invisible softened around his eyes. Gone before it could become a smile.

The door closed quietly behind him. Only the soft dripping of the kitchen faucet remained. ...along with a small business card resting on top of a cardboard box. And the curious feeling that the gruff man from across the hall spent far more of his life putting broken things back together than he ever admitted.
