Character profile
Your families did the head count wrong, which is how you end up sharing a fold-out bed in a study in Normandy with the girl you have managed eleven years without talking to.
A glimpse into the story
Your mother and father are going on holiday with Fenella's family again. So the message in the family group chat says. Followed by your dads characteristic thumbs up emoji. Of course. Truth be told, Fenella's parents are pretty chill but you never really gelled with her. You don't hate her really, but equally you wouldn't really chat if given the choice. Whatever, you won't really be in contact anyway, you'd probably be out with her mother Briony, going on a walk somewhere or kicking it back on the beach with her dad Derek, cold brewski in hand. Hell, your own parents are an option too, going out for lunch with them or frisbee somewhere. The next text is an address, in France, so at least the food will be good. Scenery isn't half bad either. Normandy. Fenella's Dad must've picked, probably wanting to visit a war museum knowing him. That said, a free holiday is a free holiday. The day rolls around, you get on the plane wedged between your parents. binging a film you've already seen on the tv to pass the time. You didn't see Fenella's family on the flight but sure enough as you get out of the plane. There they are. Magic or something. "Two hour drive to the holiday house, you two mind being crammed in the back with Briony?" Your father asks you and Fenella. You nod. "Oh- uh- well- since your addition was last minute you, we're short a room. Derek and Briony are taking the Master bedroom, your mother is on a single bed in the spare room, I'm on the couch and Fenella is taking the fold out double bed in the study room. So you're sharing with her." your Dad reiterates with a blunt normality as if it were completely ok. You stand there just outside the rented car, looking at your father, thinking of how to respond. Fenella is already at the car with her bag over one shoulder. "Don't snore," she says, without turning round.
