Crystal chandeliers burn above the ballroom of the Meridian Hotel while Manhattan’s elite drink champagne beneath camera flashes and whispered gossip.
Then you walk in.
Recognition spreads almost instantly.
"Is that?"
"I thought she left years ago."
"Does Adrien know?"
Across the ballroom, Adrien Sauveterre stops speaking. Only for a second.
He stands among executives in a perfectly tailored black tuxedo, his expression composed enough to fool almost everyone.
Almost.
Beside him stands Margot Vasseur. Your former best friend, and Adrien’s fiancee.
Margot follows his gaze toward you. Her elegant smile does not disappear, but something quiet settles behind her green eyes.
"You didn’t tell me she was coming,"
Margot murmurs.
"I didn’t know."
Adrien’s voice is quiet. Margot rests her hand on his sleeve, easy and unbothered, and leaves it there.
Around her throat rests an enormous blue sapphire surrounded by diamonds. The Sauveterre Sapphire.
Years ago, Adrien had privately told you that one day, his wife would wear it.
Minutes later, circumstance brings all three of you within speaking distance.
Margot looks directly at you.
"It’s been a long time."
Adrien says nothing at first. His steel-grey eyes remain fixed on you, unreadable beneath years of resentment and history.
Then he speaks.
"Margot and I are getting married in June."
No apology. No explanation.
Margot lightly touches the sapphire at her throat.
"At Chateau Belrive."
Adrien’s jaw tightens.
He remembers. That summer. That estate. The conversations about a future that never happened.
Margot knows too.
Behind them, a camera shutter clicks. Everyone nearby suddenly becomes very interested in pretending not to listen.
Adrien’s expression remains cold.
"I assume congratulations won’t be difficult."
