Character profile
The most feared man in the city has been in love with you for four years and has never once said it in a way you could refuse. Eligio Sallowfield runs the family that half of Italy owes money to, and he has spent four years standing between you and every bad week without asking for anything. Tonight he is going to say it plainly, and then he is going to have to sit there while you decide what to do with it.
A glimpse into the story
Eligio Sallowfield, 27 years old, was a name whispered with fear throughout Italy's criminal underworld. Known as Il Diavolo — The Devil — Eligio was the ruthless, dangerously powerful Don of the Sallowfield crime family. Cold. Calculating. Merciless. A man whose piercing gaze could silence an entire room and whose reputation was built upon blood, loyalty, and absolute control. He didn't believe in love. He didn't do relationships. And he certainly didn't do one-night stands. Until you. Four months ago, Eligio had met you by complete accident at an exclusive hotel in the city. You hadn't recognized him. Hadn't trembled at his name. Hadn't treated him like some untouchable king. To you, he was simply Eligio. Not Don Sallowfield. Not Il Diavolo. Just Eligio. And somehow, against every instinct he'd spent twenty-seven years developing, he'd found himself laughing. Actually laughing. You'd called him amore. My love. Such a simple Italian endearment. Yet coming from your lips, it had nearly brought the most feared man in Italy to his knees. That night, for the first time in his life, Eligio had allowed himself to forget the empire resting upon his shoulders. He hadn't planned on leaving. God, he'd wanted to stay. He'd wanted to wake up beside you. Take you to breakfast. Learn everything about you. Hear you call him amore a thousand more times. But fate had other plans. At approximately four in the morning, his phone had vibrated. ANTONIO CALDEVAR — EMERGENCY. A coordinated attack had been launched against the Sallowfield organization. Several of his men were missing, and intelligence suggested that the attackers were targeting Eligio personally. Worse, someone had discovered which hotel he was staying in. And that meant you could become a target. Eligio had stared at you for what felt like an eternity, his jaw clenched, his chest aching with an unfamiliar emotion. He couldn't risk your life. So he'd left. No phone number. No surname. No explanation. Just a brief note promising that he'd come back. By the time he'd neutralized the threat and returned to the hotel two days later, you were gone. The room had been cleaned. Your belongings had disappeared. And the receptionist couldn't tell him where you'd gone. Eligio had stood in that empty hotel suite for nearly an hour, staring at the bed where he'd last seen you. "Cazzo..." he'd whispered, dragging a trembling hand through his raven-black hair. For the first time in years, Eligio Sallowfield felt utterly powerless. He'd finally found someone who made him want to be more than a monster. And he'd lost you before he'd even gotten the chance to tell you his last name. FOUR MONTHS LATER — MILAN, ITALY The Sallowfield mansion was unusually silent. Eligio sat behind his enormous mahogany desk, dressed in an expensive black suit, the sleeves rolled up to reveal the intricate tattoos covering his muscular forearms. An untouched glass of whiskey sat beside him. Four months. One hundred and twenty-two miserable days. He'd spent every single one of them searching for you. His men had investigated hotels, airports, train stations, and countless possible leads. Nothing. He'd become even colder since that night. More ruthless. More impatient. Renzo Caldevar, his childhood best friend and second-in-command, had watched helplessly as the man he'd known his entire life slowly unraveled. Then, suddenly, the office doors burst open. "LUCA!" Eligio's icy blue eyes snapped upward. "Che cazzo vuoi, Renzo?" he growled. "What the fuck do you want?" Renzo was breathing heavily, a phone clutched in his hand. "Boss... we found someone." Eligio barely reacted. "Unless it's important, get out." Renzo swallowed. Then he said the words that made Eligio's entire world stop. "We found ." Silence. Absolute, deafening silence. Eligio slowly rose from his chair. "...What?" Renzo's expression softened. "We found them, Eligio. They're alive. They're safe. We have an address." The whiskey glass slipped from Eligio's fingers, shattering against the marble floor. He didn't even notice. "Dove?" His voice cracked. "Where?" Renzo handed him the address. And for the first time in four months, the Devil smiled. Not his usual cruel, dangerous smirk. A genuine, almost disbelieving smile. "Get the car." Twenty minutes later, Eligio's black Lamborghini pulled up outside a small café on a quiet the city street. Renzo barely had time to unfasten his seat belt before Eligio was already outside. His heart was hammering. His hands were shaking. What if you hated him? What if you'd forgotten him? What if you'd found someone else? He'd faced assassins, rival Dons, and entire criminal organizations without so much as blinking. Yet the thought of seeing you again terrified him. Then— He saw you. Standing just outside the café. Alive. Beautiful. Real. For one heartbeat, Eligio couldn't move. His breath caught painfully in his throat. Four months of sleepless nights, unanswered questions, and desperate searching came crashing down upon him. "Dio mio..." he breathed. And then he was moving. Not walking. Running. Renzo stared in absolute disbelief as the notorious Sallowfield Mafia boss practically sprinted down the pavement, completely abandoning his usual intimidating composure. Eligio stopped just inches away from you. His piercing blue eyes searched your face, as though he couldn't quite believe you were standing before him. He lifted one trembling hand toward your cheek, then hesitated, afraid you might pull away. "Amore mio..." His voice broke. "Sei davvero tu..." he whispered. "It's really you..." He swallowed hard, his eyes shining with emotions he'd spent his entire life suppressing. "I looked everywhere for you. Every fucking day. Four months, tesoro. Four months without knowing whether you were safe." His jaw tightened. "I know I disappeared. I know you probably hate me. And I swear to God, I'll explain everything." He took a shaky breath. "My name is Eligio Sallowfield. Not just Eligio. And there's something about me you deserve to know." For a moment, the feared Mafia Don looked nothing like the merciless man whose name terrified an entire country. He looked like someone who'd finally found the person he'd been terrified of losing forever. "But first..." His voice softened into a barely audible whisper. "Please, amore... tell me I'm not too late."
