Alderleigh, 1813.
Dear gentle reader,
The social season has arrived once more.
And with it comes the familiar spectacle: mothers preparing their daughters, gentlemen pretending not to be interested, families calculating alliances, and young people being encouraged to fall in love with precisely the sort of person their families have already approved.
How reassuringly predictable.
And yet, this author has heard whispers that this season may prove rather less predictable than the last.
There are new faces in Alderleigh.
Old families harbor new ambitions.
And at least one household appears destined to attract considerably more attention than it would prefer.
Perhaps, dear reader, we should begin there.
— Lady the Wren's Letter
The first grand ball of the season is already underway.
The ballroom glows beneath hundreds of candles. Silk rustles across polished floors. Jewels catch the light as conversations rise and fall beneath the music of the orchestra.
Everywhere, people are watching.
Who arrived with whom.
Who danced with whom.
Who avoided whom.
And, most importantly, who might be considered a suitable match.
At the center of the attention stands the Alderleigh family.
Lavinia Alderleigh has perfected the art of appearing entirely at ease while quietly observing nearly everything that happens around her.
Her eldest daughter, Perpetua, stands beside her.
Tonight matters.
Perpetua has officially entered society, and the expectations surrounding her are impossible to miss.
Lavinia gives her daughter a reassuring look.
"You needn't look so frightened, darling."
Perpetua glances toward the crowded ballroom.
"I am not frightened."
"Of course not."
Lavinia's smile suggests she does not believe her for a moment.
Nearby, Aeneas Alderleigh watches the room with an expression far less enthusiastic than his mother's.
The newly titled Viscount has apparently decided that the entire social season is a responsibility rather than an opportunity.
Benedict notices.
"You look miserable."
Aeneas turns toward his brother.
"I do not."
"You do."
"I am observing."
"That is what miserable people call it."
Colin, standing nearby, quietly laughs.
Aeneas gives both brothers a warning look.
Benedict looks entirely unrepentant.
Across the ballroom, Theodora Alderleigh watches the spectacle with open skepticism.
She has been dragged into the very social world she has spent years criticizing, and she seems determined to make her displeasure known.
"Everyone is staring at everyone else."
Colin glances at her.
"That is generally how a ballroom works."
"No. I mean they're staring as though they expect something to happen."
"Something usually does."
"That is precisely the problem."
Colin smiles.
Theodora does not.
Then the room changes.
The orchestra quiets.
Conversations lower.
Heads turn toward the entrance.
The the Dowager has arrived.
the Dowager enters with her usual commanding presence, immediately transforming the atmosphere of the ballroom.
Everyone bows.
Perpetua lowers into a graceful curtsy.
Lavinia watches carefully.
Aeneas straightens.
Theodora looks considerably less impressed than everyone else.
The the Dowager's gaze travels through the ballroom.
She has seen countless debutantes.
Countless families.
Countless young men pretending to be indifferent.
She knows precisely what the city expects from her.
And she also knows that the most interesting people are often the ones who do not behave as expected.
Not far away, Merrit watches the the Dowager's arrival with a knowing expression.
She has already noticed several promising possibilities.
Several unfortunate ones as well.
"Well,"
she murmurs,
"this season may not be entirely hopeless."
The musicians begin again.
The ballroom slowly returns to life.
Perpetua is introduced to several gentlemen.
Aeneas is approached by yet another acquaintance.
Benedict disappears toward the edge of the room.
Colin begins another conversation.
Theodora looks for an escape.
Lavinia continues observing her children.
Merrit continues observing everyone.
And then something catches her attention.
Someone has just entered the ballroom.
The person is unfamiliar to most of the room.
Perhaps not to everyone.
Perhaps someone recognizes the face.
Perhaps someone recognizes the name.
Perhaps no one does.
There is no announcement yet.
No explanation.
No convenient label telling the room what it ought to think.
Merrit's eyes narrow slightly with interest.
Lavinia follows her gaze.
Aeneas turns.
Perpetua notices the sudden shift in attention.
Even Theodora looks toward the entrance.
And somewhere in Alderleigh, a blank page waits.
Lady the Wren's Letter does not know the story yet.
But she may soon.
For now, the newcomer stands at the threshold of a ballroom filled with strangers, possibilities, expectations and secrets.
No one can decide what happens next.
Not the the Dowager.
Not Merrit.
Not the Alderleighs.
Not even Lady the Wren's Letter.
That choice belongs to you.
