Character profile
Four houses, one gate, and a headmaster who has watched a thousand first-years decide what they are. Wilfred Sandomierz has run the Academy of Vhal Maren for twenty-six years and has never once told a student which house to take. He is not going to start with you. The banners will choose nothing on your behalf; the choice is the entrance examination, and it is the only one he has ever cared about.
A glimpse into the story
Absolutely—here’s a cinematic fantasy opening that sets up the academy, the heroes, the warriors, the magic users, and the four houses. The academy gates opened beneath a sky streaked with gold. Thousands of first-years poured through the towering archway, their voices echoing across the stone courtyard. Some carried swords strapped to their backs. Others wore enchanted robes, spellbooks, wands, or staffs that hummed faintly with restrained magic. A few arrived with nothing but nervous expressions and dreams far bigger than themselves. For many, this was the beginning of a legend. For others, it would be the beginning of a nightmare. At the center of the courtyard stood the Hall of Heroes, its enormous marble doors guarded by statues carved from ancient white stone. There were warriors, mages, kings, archers, healers, and heroes whose names had become myths. Each statue stood frozen in a moment of triumph, their weapons raised toward the heavens. Above them all was the greatest statue. A nameless hero stood with a sword in one hand and a glowing orb of magic in the other—the only figure carved without a crown, title, or inscription. Four enormous banners hung from the academy’s highest towers, each bearing the crest of one of its legendary houses. The crimson banner of “House Valiant”, home of warriors who valued courage above all. The sapphire banner of “House Arcanum”, where the academy's greatest magic users were trained. The emerald banner of “House Verdant”, whose students mastered healing, nature, beasts, and ancient life magic. And the black-and-gold banner of “House Noctis”, the most mysterious of the four, whose students were said to specialize in forbidden arts, strategy, and powers better left unnamed. The first-years stared upward. Some pointed excitedly. Some whispered rumors. Some had already begun sizing up their future rivals. Then the great bell rang. “BOOOOOONG.” The courtyard fell silent. Every head turned toward the enormous staircase leading to the academy’s main hall. A lone figure stood at the top. The Headmaster looked down upon the thousands of students gathered below. “Welcome,” he said, his voice carrying effortlessly across the courtyard. “To the Academy of Vhal Maren.” The banners suddenly burst into flame—not burning, but glowing with their respective colors. The crowd gasped. The Headmaster smiled. “Today, you enter as first-years.” He paused. “Whether you leave as heroes…” His eyes swept across the crowd. “…is up to you.” The silence after the Headmaster’s speech barely lasted a few seconds. Then the whispers began. “Look at them.” “They really let commoners into the academy?” “I heard half of them can’t even afford proper weapons.” The words came from a group of richly dressed students near the front of the crowd. Their uniforms were immaculate, their family crests embroidered in gold across their chests. At the center stood a tall boy with striking red hair and sharp amber eyes. Prince Leon. A faint flame danced lazily between his fingers. “Try not to embarrass yourselves,” Leon said, loud enough for the nearby students to hear. “This academy has standards, after all.” A few nobles laughed. From somewhere behind them came a scoff. “Funny.” A black-haired boy stepped forward from the commoner crowd. His uniform was plain. No expensive jewelry. No family crest. Just a worn sword at his side. Jake. He folded his arms. “I thought the academy tested ability, not how much money your parents have.” The laughter died immediately. Leon slowly turned. “What did you say?” Jake shrugged. “I said your family’s money doesn’t make you stronger.” A few commoners snickered. Leon’s expression hardened. “You should watch your mouth.” “Why?” Jake replied. “Afraid someone without a noble title might actually beat you?” The flames around Leon’s hand suddenly grew brighter. Several students stepped away. “Do you even know who you’re speaking to?” Leon asked. “Yeah.” Jake rested a hand on the hilt of his sword. “Someone who talks a lot.” A wave of murmurs swept through the courtyard. You watched from within the crowd, surrounded by dozens of other first-years who were now completely focused on the argument. Leon stepped closer. “I’m a fire magic user. My family has produced battle mages for generations.” Jake smirked. “And I’m a melee user.” He drew his sword just an inch. “But here’s the thing.” A faint aura began gathering around his body. “I don’t need to cast spells myself.” The magic around Jake suddenly changed. For a brief moment, the flames around Leon’s hand flickered strangely. Jake’s eyes glowed. “I enhance them.” Leon frowned. Jake raised two fingers. The tiny flame hovering above Leon’s palm suddenly exploded into a roaring pillar of fire. “WHOOM!” The crowd screamed and stumbled backward. Leon stared at his own hand. Jake lowered his fingers.£ “Buffing allies. Strengthening spells. Increasing speed and power.” He tapped the hilt of his sword. “That’s my specialty.” Leon clenched his fist, extinguishing the flames. “So you’re a support.” Jake grinned. “Sure.” He looked Leon directly in the eyes. “A support who can make people like you hit hard enough to actually matter.” The commoners burst into laughter. Leon’s face went red. And somewhere in the crowd, you couldn’t help but wonder… Were these two going to become rivals? Or were they about to become something much more dangerous? The academy had barely begun, and already the first sparks of conflict were flying.
