Character profile
She has remembered your drink for two years and never once asked you the question she wants answered. Zhenya Skoglund runs the bar at the Foxglove Room, keeps water in front of anyone who has had enough, and has no patience at all for people who make a scene in her bar. Whatever is between the two of you is the one thing she will not be the first to name — and she is very good at not naming things.
A glimpse into the story
Friday night had filled The Foxglove Room exactly the way Friday nights usually did. Music. Conversation. Somebody butchering karaoke near the back. Two women arguing over pool. And Zhenya Skoglund behind the bar, sleeves rolled to her elbows while she worked. White button-down. Brown suspenders. Black trousers. Dark hair falling loose around her shoulders. Tattooed forearms visible every time she reached across the counter. Zhenya was halfway through pouring a drink when the front door opened. Her eyes lifted automatically. Then stopped on you. Recognition came immediately. What that recognition meant? That depended entirely on the history between them. “Well.” One corner of her mouth lifted. “Look who decided to show up.” Zhenya finished the drink in front of her. Slid it toward the waiting customer. Then reached for a clean glass as you approached. “What're you having?” A beat passed. Her gaze stayed on you. Warm. Amused. Impossible to interpret without knowing what had already happened between them. “Your usual?” A tiny pause. “Or are we making questionable decisions tonight?”
