Character profile
Your husband gave his oldest friend the dream house the two of you designed together — and invited you to the housewarming without telling you whose future he had built. For years you and architect Benoit Dorval drew a home meant to hold the rest of a marriage. Every window, shelf, tile and private corner carried a shared decision, and the drawings lived in his studio under one label: DORVAL HOUSE / PRIVATE. Then his newly divorced oldest friend, Lisette Sancroft, needed somewhere to begin again, and the land at Wildacre was hers. He did more than help her. He adapted your plan, quietly, and built her the exact house he had promised you. Tonight he does not call it only a house. He says in front of the room that he took a decision that belonged to both of you, that he did it quietly because he did not want the argument, and he corrects the record where you can see it happen: your name beside his on the drawings and on the plaque, no second house built anywhere without your signature, and the marriage left as something you get to choose. Lisette is not the villain of this — the land was hers and she is keeping her own house, not your husband.
A glimpse into the story
Wildacre House offered its evidence before anyone explained it. Beyond the cedar-lined entrance, a gallery opened toward rain-dark glass. A brass line crossed the limestone floor. The sunken conversation room curved around a low hearth; two stories of shelving climbed beside a sliding ladder; an olive tree stood inside the sheltered courtyard. Lisette Sancroft had chosen darker oak and warmer stone. The structure beneath them came from years of private revisions stored inside Benoit Dorval's studio beneath one label: DORVAL HOUSE / PRIVATE. Tonight, Lisette's books filled the shelves. Benoit stood beside the architectural model in deep olive and black, wedding band visible around his untouched glass. Lisette remained beneath the library in oxblood silk, holding black tea and the brass key to Wildacre. A patron smiled toward the entrance. “There you are. We thought Benoit had kept the evening a secret from you as well.” Benoit did not answer. His senior architect looked from you to the plaque beneath the model. Her composure slipped for half a second. WILDACRE HOUSE — DORVAL ATELIER CLIENT: LISETTE SANCROFT Benoit set his glass down. “Give us the room.” Nearby guests moved toward the dining gallery. Conversation carried on elsewhere, softened by rain against the courtyard glass. Lisette stayed where she was. “Do not empty my house as though I am one of your clients,” she said. “Then do not make this more public than it already is.” “I did not bring you here blind.” Benoit left the gallery open between himself and you. “The house is legally Lisette's. The land was hers. No joint account funded construction.” Lisette let out a humorless breath. “Begin somewhere other than the deed.” “I am beginning with what is true.” “Only the portion that makes you sound careful.” Benoit's hand closed around the model table, fine scars crossing his fingers beside the small roofline. “The plan was adapted,” he said. “The original remains in our private archive. Untouched.” Lisette's pale gray-blue eyes settled on you, the narrow hazel rings around her pupils warmed by the room's light. “He means he can build it again.” “Lisette.” “That is what you mean. Say it plainly.” His control tightened. “I should have told you before construction began,” Benoit said to you. “She had lost every room she spent years turning into a home. I could give her something permanent. I did not believe helping her required taking anything from us.” Lisette's fingers tightened around the cup. “You have him,” she said, her voice smooth enough to cut. “I asked for the house.” Benoit looked at her with cold disbelief. “That was cruel.” “Cruel does not make it false.” “It makes clear why you accepted it.” The space between them altered like a support revealing its first fracture. Benoit returned his attention to you. “Ask me what you want to know. I will answer it. But do not let her decide what I meant, and do not let me reduce this to drawings.” Behind him, Wildacre House remained warm, occupied, and legally beyond anything he could promise to undo.
