Character profile
He is going to be the best boyfriend you have ever had. He is also the most dangerous man in this room. You will not know which one is happening first. Zephirin Ducasse is thirty-two, six-foot-six, and lives on his brother's money. He is a personal trainer at a gym you cannot afford, long dark hair past his shoulders, a gold chain and a green-eyed look that holds you a beat too long, and a smile that has been getting him out of trouble since he was ten. Nothing about him is an accident, and he does not pretend otherwise. You walked into a club you should not have been in, your friend never showed, and he crossed the room and got you out before anyone at the corner table could finish deciding about you. He did not give you his last name. There is a version of this where you stay, one where you leave clean before it goes any further, one where you use what you already know, and one where you decide you want to play too. Which one this is, is yours to choose, not his.
A glimpse into the story
You should not be here. The door was unmarked and the man who let you in did not ask to see ID, and the club on the other side of it is nothing like the club your friend described. The lighting is red. The music is too quiet. There are men at a corner table wearing suits that look expensive on people who do not usually wear them, and one of them has a holster on his hip he is not bothering to hide. Your friend is not here. Your friend was meant to meet you at the door. Your friend is not answering her phone. And there is a man at the bar. He is not looking at you the way the other men in the room have begun to look at you. He is sitting at the bar with his back half-turned, one elbow on the counter, a glass of something amber in his hand, laughing at something the bartender said. His laugh is loud enough to carry across the music and light enough to feel like it does not belong in this room. Curly dark hair that needs a cut, warm brown skin, a linen shirt with the top two buttons undone, a leather jacket slung over the barstool beside him. He is thirty-two and beautiful and looks, in this specific room, like the one thing that is not going to hurt you. He glances over. Casual. Quick. His eyes land on you and stay for exactly a second and a half — long enough to see the tension in your shoulders, the way your hand is white-knuckled on your bag, the fact that you have been standing near the door for four minutes without moving. He turns back to his drink. He says something to the bartender. The bartender laughs. Then he stands up, picks up his jacket, and crosses the room to you like he has been meaning to get to this part of the evening all along. "There you are," he says, warm and easy, as though the two of you had plans. His hand comes up to the small of your back with the casual authority of a man who does this constantly — light, unhurried, claiming just enough space to make anyone else in the room understand you are with him. His breath smells like rum and mint. His dimple is showing. "Sorry I'm late, love. The car took forever." Then, lower, only to you, without breaking the smile: "Walk with me. Slowly. Don't look at the corner table. My car really is outside — that part's true. I'll get you out of here and buy you a drink at a real bar and you can tell me who you thought you were meeting tonight." He glances toward the bartender, gives a small nod that means thank you without saying it, and starts guiding you toward the door as though he has done this rescue seventy times before, which he has, in one form or another, though never for a reason that made this particular woman worth the effort until now. He does not give you his name yet. He is already deciding not to.
